Why are there flies in my house all of a sudden? It’s a question I’m sure you’ve asked yourself If you’ve noticed an infestation of swarming black bugs flying all over your kitchen and home. Where did they come from and how to get rid of them- are the next questions you’ll want answered. Today I’ll explain what’s up if you’ve got a sudden infestation of blow flies, fruit flies or cluster flies in your house and how you can finally get rid of them.

Why are there flies in my house all of a sudden?

Every summer we get a batch of pesky house flies and the occasional outbreak of fruit flies invading our home. Its gross, creepy and most of all- annoying. We have tried many methods to get rid of these flies. Some have worked great, and others not so much. I’ll explain what to do if you have a fly problem in your home.

Before we figure out how to get rid of the flies we need to know why they’re there and what they want.

The most common reason for flies swarming all over your house is an infestation inside or nearby your home. If you suddenly see a swarm of flies that means dozens of eggs have already hatched and developed into flies. The source is likely inside your house, garage, attic or garden.

The meaning of flies in the house

There are some old wives tales and myths about flies representing evil and having a spiritual or symbolic meaning . Flies can symbolize a quick and abrupt change coming into your life. Realistically, you probably just need to go clean your kitchen.

If you are really into that psychic stuff you might be worried that evil spirits are afoot. I promise you, no one has put a hex on you (okay maybe they have, but that’s not the source of your fly problem.)

Fly Food Sources and Breeding Grounds

Common house flies are attracted to decaying organic matter like:

• Rotting meat
• Discarded food in the garbage can
• Feces (omg!)

Fruit flies are attracted to sugary substances like:

• Overripe fruit
• Spilled soda or juice
• Alcohol (party!)

What is the cause of a cluster fly infestation?

Allow me to slip on my lab coat and drive deep into some science-y stuff:

Cluster or attic flies are the genus Pollenia in the blowfly family Calliphoridae. Unlike more familiar blow flies, such as the bluebottle genus Phormia, they do not present a health hazard because they do not lay eggs in human food.

Cluster fly larvae develop inside earthworms living in the ground outside of homes. The larvae develop into cocoons before hatching into adult flies. The adult flies are attracted to the sunny side of homes in the fall, looking for ways to get inside before winter. Don’t worry, cluster flies do not breed indoors.

Basically cluster flies are just inside your house because they want to stay warm. We’ll go over how to eliminate them in a minute.

Large Black Flies in the House

Flies come into our home every summer and drive us crazy. My husband more so than me, but they turn him into a crazy person and then I get all crazy because he drives me crazy and so here I am today teaching you more than you ever wanted to know about flies.

The warm weather months are fly breeding season. I live on a farm with lots of pig, horse and goat poop. It’s the perfect breeding ground for flies and other fun vermin.

Is There a Dead Rat in the Wall?

Back in the day I lived in basement suite that was infested with rats. We eventually got the rats under control (that’s another equally fun and disgusting story for another day) but one died in the wall.

I was young and had never had to deal with a pest infestation before and wondered what the weird smell in the kitchen was. Then, all of a sudden, dozens of flies were all over my little apartment- in the middle of winter.

It wasn’t until after I complained to my mom about my stinky, fly-ridden apartment that she explained to me that:

  • a) Something died in the walls
  • b) That something was the source of the flies.

How to Get Rid of Flies

The easiest and best way to get rid of flies in your home is to practice proper sanitation. In other words-don’t be a dirty little pig. If you eliminate the fly’s source of food and breeding ground then they will literally fly away and go bother someone else.

If you can’t keep your place clean then all the other tricks I’m about to share with you are going to end up being less effective.

Sanitation starts with eliminating the food sources and breeding grounds of flies in the first place. Meat, garbage and rotting vegetables are where flies thrive and lay eggs. These are delicious food sources for both the flies and resulting larvae.

Start by emptying your garbage cans and clean the kitchen. Do all the dishes and make sure all the food in the pantry is sealed shut.

This also means pet food. If you feed your cat or dog wet food you need to clean the bowl daily otherwise flies will land on it, lay eggs, and the eggs will turn into maggots. The next time you feed your pet you will scream in horror at the gross maggots in their food (ask me how I know!)

Sanitation is also about eliminating all points of entry. That’s why window and door screens were invented. In addition, walls, floors and ceilings should also be properly sealed to prevent entry of flies (or wasps who may build a giant nest in the ceiling above your bedroom- ask me how I know about that too!)

Of course if you clean up your house, put screens up on the doors and windows and still have a sudden outbreak of flies you should probably start checking for dead animals in your walls or garden. Just use your nose and follow the scent.

Now onto the advanced methods of fly control. Here are a few ways to repel flies naturally.

How to Repel Flies Naturally

Ultra sonic Pest Repellers

We actually got one of these last year when we had a mouse that decided to make a home in our kitchen (another fun story for another day). The ultrasonic pest repeller will protect your home, warehouse, office or any other property from all kinds of pests including not only insects but also rats, bats and even squirrels. The pest repeller emits ultrasonic and electromagnetic waves which pests don’t like. If you have a pet hamster or other small rodent pets don’t use it as it would be cruel to the animal.

Apple Cider Vinegar Fruit Fly Solution

Fill a glass jar with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap and place a paper funnel in the jar. This works best for fruit flies because they are attracted to the fermented apple smell. The flies will go down into the jar, drink the solution and become poisoned and trapped in the jar.

Get a fly swatter

We purchased some fly swatters a couple of years ago. They work great, if you have good aim. There are also electronic bug zappers that look like tennis rackets. When you smack the fly, they will get zapped and die. These work well and I recommend them for wasps and hornets that won’t leave you alone.

How to get rid of cluster flies naturally

Since cluster flies don’t eat your garbage or lay eggs on them, they will simply die if they get trapped in your house long enough. Most people simply vacuum them up.

Have you ever had a sudden swarm of flies in your house? What did you do about it? Let me know in the comments!

How to get rid of flies in a house or apartment? Mechanical, chemical and folk remedies for getting rid of flies in an apartment

Perhaps there are no more annoying insects than flies.

As a rule, they emerge from hibernation in April-May and begin to proliferate and spread various microbes unsafe for humans.

This article will focus on how to get rid of flies in your home.

What is the harm from flies?

Flies are carriers of all kinds of viruses and germs, most of which are dangerous to the human body. An ordinary fly, which flew off the street and settled on food, can leave particles affected by a huge amount of viruses on them. Flies lay their eggs in the pulp or peel of vegetables and fruits, making them thus dangerous to humans and subsequently capable of causing various diseases.

The most common diseases that can cause flies are:

Each of these diseases is very difficult to carry by the body, so you need to get rid of flies in your home in a timely manner.

How to get rid of flies in an apartment: mechanical methods

The mechanical methods of dealing with annoying insects include:

1) Fly swatterwhich is used to eliminate flies manually;

2) Velcrothat attract insects with a sweet aroma. Flies land on them, but can no longer fly away. Velcro can be purchased at any hardware store or supermarket;

3) Fumigator. This device is very convenient in that to eliminate the flies you only need to charge it with a special plate or a flask with liquid and connect it to the network. At the same time, a person does not feel an unpleasant smell at all, but for flies he is very unpleasant and scares them away. In addition, aesthetically, he looks much more attractive than the same Velcro.

To enhance the effect, it is better to use several methods at once. This will help to eliminate not only flies, but also other insects such as cockroaches or ants.

How to get rid of flies in an apartment: folk remedies

If flies do not swarm in flocks in your premises, but constantly fly from the street through the windows, you can use one of the folk remedies, time-tested. First of all, be sure to install mosquito nets on the windows, this will save you from almost all types of insects in the room. You can also put indoor plants on the windowsill, the smell of which is very disliked by flies. These include: geranium, myrtle, eucalyptus, seedlings from tomatoes and the like.

Also, special herbs will perfectly cope with this task: elderberry, tansy, fern leaves. All that is needed is to spread them all over the house in small quantities.

To eliminate flies, you can also use ordinary black ground pepper. To do this, you need to make a mixture of sweet water and pepper, and after a couple of days you will not find a single fly in the apartment.

These insects do not tolerate saccharin on the spirit. To make the bait with it, soak an ordinary newspaper with saccharin and honey dissolved in water and dry it. After the flies are active, put the prima on the table and drop a small amount of water on it. Insects that flock to the sweet smell of a newspaper will die within a couple of hours.

Flax flax has one of the most unpleasant odors for insects (you can purchase it at any pharmacy). Prepare the following recipe: take flax, add it to milk and prepare a decoction from this mixture. This broth will need to be placed in all corners of the room with flies. After a short time, annoying insects will fly away from home. Flies also really dislike the scent of rosin, tansy and castor oil.

You can get rid of uninvited guests by wet cleaning using special means such as DDT or Hexochlaran. These funds must be diluted in water and thoroughly wipe all surfaces in the room. Along with cold and frost, flies also really don’t like drafts, so try to ventilate the apartment as often as possible.

Today are very popular. ultrasonic repellers. With their help, you can get rid of annoying «guests» as quickly and safely as possible without the use of chemicals. The principle of operation of this device is based on the use of high ultrasonic waves, which are completely harmless to humans, but at the same time very strongly affect flies and other insects, forcing them to move away as far as possible from the source of ultrasonic waves. This device works great indoors, but it is not suitable for outdoor areas, so it is better to use it in houses and apartments.

How to get rid of flies in an apartment: chemicals

If flies and other insects fly around the room in swarms, then here, of course, it is worth putting aside all mechanical and folk remedies and using the most powerful one — chemicals. You can use the services of professionals who will come to you and do chemical cleaning, but you can do it yourself. We present to your attention a list of the most famous and effective chemicals in the fight against annoying insects.

1. Aerosols. These include the good old «Chlorophos» and «Dichlorvos». The principle of operation of these drugs is very simple — a jet of poisonous substances gets on insects and instantly destroys them. To enhance the effect of aerosols against flies, you need to spray it indoors, and only after a while open the windows to ventilate the room. This method will significantly reduce the population of these insects.

2. Plates from flies for the fumigator — One of the modern means of controlling flies. It works this way: you need to insert a plate in the device that is saturated with the toxic substance vaportrin. When you turn on the device at the bottom of the plate heats up, and the toxic substance begins to evaporate, thereby destroying insects.

3. Duct tapeimpregnated with a toxic substance. This method can be attributed to both mechanical and chemical means. Velcro tape is hung in a room with flies and attracts them with its smell. Insects fly to the tape, stick to it, and after some time die.

Each of these chemicals is very effective, but there is a serious drawback — they contain poison. Therefore, while working with them, children and pets should not be in the room.

Fly Prevention

Most people do not attach much importance to the danger that comes from these insects. And in vain, because a fly is not only an annoying insect, it is also a carrier of the most dangerous diseases, such as diphtheria, tuberculosis, dysentery and many others. Flies lay their eggs in food, and the person who ate them has a risk of getting one of these diseases. Therefore, it is much more rational and simpler to carry out prevention from these insects than to deal with the consequences later. Follow a few simple recommendations, and your home will be much better protected from flies and other insects.

1. Try to carry out wet cleaning as often as possible, because any insect prefers dirt and debris, and if this is not in the room, then they will have nothing to do here. Try to dispose of the bin in a timely manner and put fresh fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator.

2. If you live in a private house and keep pets, for example, cattle, then the place of deployment of flies may be a corral or a place where manure is stored. Experts recommend cleaning pens with animals as often as possible, and regularly pour a solution of karfos on manure: insects do not transfer it to the spirit.

3. When flowers and trees began to blossom in the street, and spring came, be sure to hang mosquito nets on the windows, they will become an obstacle for flies to enter the room.

4. In order for insects to fly around your house, plant bushes of bird cherry or elderberry around it. Also, insects do not tolerate the smell of walnut or wormwood. For people living in apartments, it is recommended to put ordinary geranium in pots on all windowsills.

Do not forget that the appearance of flies, as well as other annoying insects, is much easier to prevent than to deal with them later. Follow these simple recommendations, and you will forever forget about such an unpleasant phenomenon as flies in the room.

How to Get Rid of Flies in the House During Winter Time

Things You’ll Need

Antibacterial cleaning wipes

Sticky fly strips

Minimize chemical insecticide use in the kitchen. Pesticides can be harmful or fatal if they come in contact with food or food service items such as plates and cups.

Flies are an expected nuisance in the spring and summer, but some homeowners will find themselves in the midst of an infestation in cold winter months. Some species of flies, such as face and cluster flies, lay eggs in the cracks and crevasses of a home. These eggs hatch throughout the winter, and the little flies have nowhere to go but the home. The cooler weather chills the bugs down, making them fly slower than warm weather flies. You can always swat or spray them, but a few other common pest control products should eliminate the flies.

Step 1

Plug spaces or cracks with cold weather caulk. Filling in these gaps will keep out drafts and seal off the eggs. Concentrate on holes in undisturbed areas, such as the basement and attic, where flies are most likely to lay eggs.

Step 2

Hang sticky fly traps around the inside of your home. These traps are normally a roll on sticky paper you unravel and hang from the ceiling. Flies are instantly stuck to any trap they touch and die on the paper. The number of sticky traps needed will depend on the amount of flies in the house. Space sticky traps at least 10 feet apart to maximize the number of flies caught per room, and throw away the traps when they become littered with dead bugs.

Step 3

Place stationary fly traps in heavily infested rooms. Once the flies enter the domed traps, they are unable to fly out and fall into the insecticide in the base of the trap.

Step 4

Set off bug foggers to eradicate stubborn flies. Close all windows and doors, unplug electronics and turn off pilot lights that might ignite insecticide fumes. Place a layer of newspaper in the center of the infested room, and set the bomb on the paper. Depress the trigger and quickly leave the room, closing the door behind you. Leave the room closed for at least two hours, or as advised in the directions. Open doors and windows to aerate the room, dispose of the empty bomb and newspaper, and clean all surfaces to remove dead flies and traces of insecticide.

Most homeowners have had to struggle with indoor flies at one time or another. Several types of flies can invade your home. Most of the large ones are easily recognizable as blow or common houseflies. Smaller flies inside the home are usually attracted to decaying food or plant materials, according to the University of Nebraska Extension website.

Causes

Little flies are usually attracted by garbage, decaying organic matter and general debris. For these reasons, they are sometimes called «filth» files. This does not mean they are found only in dirty or cluttered homes, however. Flies can invade the neatest and cleanest of homes. A single overripe banana, for example, can be the start of a fruit fly infestation. Over-watering a plant creates the perfect soggy soil conditions for fungus gnats to multiply and thrive. Luckily, the flies themselves are usually not harmful to humans, but they can be quite a nuisance.

Types

Fruit flies (Drosophila spp.) are usually found around rotting fruit, which is their preferred location for laying eggs. They will also cluster around garbage and plants. The bodies of these insects are about 1/8 inch and tan in color. Phorid flies (Phoridae) are very similar to fruit flies and cluster in the same areas. They can be slightly smaller than fruit flies and have darker bodies. They also seem to «hop» rather than fly. Fungus gnats (Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae) look like tiny mosquitoes and swarm around wet organic matter, such as overly wet soil in a houseplant.

Control

Yellow sticky traps, which are available at any garden center, can be used to trap the flying adult insects. Throw out any rotting food and take out any odoriferous garbage that may be in your home, as both may contain eggs. Take out recycling as well — flies will be attracted to the sticky-sweet residue left in soda cans. Drench the soil of plants infested with fungus gnats with an insecticide. You can also use an insecticide spray, but this will pollute the air in your home and any food nearby. For that reason, it’s best not to use chemicals unless absolutely necessary. Instead, consider a bait or trap.

How To Get Rid Of House Flies

House Fly Control

The First step in House fly control is exclusion and sanitation. After these measures, you can use insecticides that come in residual forms, aerosols, fogging materials, and baiting forms. Fly traps have long been a favorite. There are many forms of fly traps, from disposable fly traps to electronic fly light traps with replaceable light bulbs and glue boards.

Exclusion and Sanitation

  1. Sanitation is the first measure of defense, even though there are various traps and sprays that are used to kill flies, it is necessary to eliminate the source in order to eliminate them.
  2. Whenever possible, food and materials on which the flies can lay their eggs must be removed or destroyed, which will isolate the egg-laying adult. Killing adult flies will reduce infestation, but elimination of breeding areas is necessary for good House Fly control management.
  3. Garbage cans and dumpsters should have tight-fitting lids and be cleaned regularly.
  4. Drainage will often aid control, getting rid of extra moisture.
  5. Openings of buildings should be tightly screened with screen.

Fly Control Products — House Flies

Recommendations

Insecticide Residual Concentrates

House flies rest on sunny surfaces in the daytime, and have a tendency to come inside or under eaves at night. These areas where the flies are resting can be sprayed with residual or contact insecticides. The flies rest on the sprayed surface and pick up enough insecticide to kill them. When spraying the surfaces, it should be wet enough to the point of runoff, but not enough to form puddles.

Insecticide Dusts

You can also use a dust D-Fense Dust. Dust this into all cracks and crevices. The dust will flow into the void areas. Pay attention to the west and south walls and caulk any openings.

Pyrethrin Insecticide Aerosols

For immediate results, use pyrethrins in an aerosol form and space spray.

Pyrethrins work quickly but give no lasting residual.

These aerosols can be used as a quick kill insecticide, reducing populations of flying insects for short term results.

Fogging Insecticides and Professional Foggers

If you find that fogging inside a building is neccessary, we also carry fogging material and professional fogger equipment.

Fly Baits — Outside Use

Insecticide granule fly baits can be used to aid in house-fly control. These baits should be distributed along walls, window sills or other areas where flies congregate inside buildings, and in areas out side where flies congregate. Maxforce Fly Spot Bait is a convenient form of Fly Bait, because it can be sprayed on surfaces.

As with all fly control, sanitation is extremely critical when using a fly bait. Remove trash and other breeding sources, so the Fly bait will be their only feeding source.

Make sure the baits are inaccessible to animals or children.

Maxforce Fly Spot Bait -Comes in two sizes, and may be sprayed on or painted on the wall surfaces; very fast with immediate results.

Zyrox Fly Bait- Excellent choice for lots of flies, with low use rates. May be used inside or outside.

Golden Malrin Fly Bait-Comes with a sugar based attractant, Muscamone and comes in the larger 40 lb size as well.

Maxforce Fly Bait-Contains imidacloprid and may be used in a fly bait station or scattered on the ground. Two sizes-5 lb and 40lb.

FBS-1 Fly Bait Station
Holds granular fly bait. The FBS-1 Fly Station has a durable hinge that locks and is tamper-resistant. It has specifically designed vents allow flies into station, while protecting bait from wind, rain, & other elements.

Apache Fly Bait Station
Holds 2 ounces of Golden Marlin or MaxForce Fly Bait (sold separately; child proof when hung from the air

Fly Light Traps — Inside Use

These electronic fly light traps are very efficient and functional to be used inside only. They are very popular in restaurants and commercial buildings. We carry fly zappers, fly lights with glue pads.

The top recommendations for fly light traps are the Matrix II All Seasons Fly Traps.

The fly trap comes in two colors, white and black.

Fly Glue Traps

Catchmaster Gold Sticks Fly Glue Trap Paper Catchmaster Gold Sticks M 962 are long tubes with a sticky glue and fly pheromone attractant for capturing and killing house flies and other nuisance flies.

Fly Ribbon Catchers (ribbon length-about 2 feet)

Window Fly Traps

Window Fly Traps allow you to use a trap to stick on the window, without using an insecticide.

Outside Fly Traps

Fly Be Gone Fly Trap and Catchmaster Disposable Fly Trap are excellent traps for the outside, with unique attractants lures included. They will trap house flies, blow flies and a broad range of other fly species. Place the Flies Be Gone and Catchmaster disposable fly traps away from areas that you want to see flies(outside patio table, etc.); the special attractant lure will draw the flies. You will want to place the outside Flies Be Gone Trap or Cathmaster Disposable Fly Trap disposable trap in sunny area on cooler days and shady areas on warmer days.

Inspecting For House Flies

Inside:
Trash cans, dirty diapers, rotten foods, etc are possible breeding areas for inspecting House Fly activity.

Outside-breeding sites: House Flies may be found feeding and breeding in fresh manure, rotting fruits and vegetables, garbage, damp garbage, and decaying organic materials that are located outside of the structure.

Most of the time, when you find house flies inside, it is because they are coming inside the structures. Check cracks around windows, doors and vents as possible entry points. It is crucial to find out where the breeding sources are located and how they are entering the buildings. Rural areas where farms are present may be more problematic for the higher number of breeding sites than areas in urban settings. In residential areas, pet manure, which is not picked up regularly, can be a breeding source for house flies.

House Fly Identification

The common House fly is medium sized (1/6 to 1/4 inch long. The common house fly is a pest all over the world. The adult has the fourth wing vein sharply angled and four length-wise dark stripes on the top of the thorax. Its face has two velvety stripes which are silver above and gold below. The female fly has a much wider space between the eyes than the male. The house fly is often confused with the face fly which also infests structures. The face fly is similar in appearance, but a little larger and darker than the House Fly.

House Fly Biology & Habits

Each adult female begins laying eggs a few days after hatching, laying a total of five to six batches of 75 to 100 small white oval eggs. In warm weather these hatch in 12 to 24 hours into cream-colored larvae, which burrow into the food material on which they hatched. These larvae grow and pupate in 4 to 7 days in warm weather. The mature larva contracts until its skin forms a case about 1/4 inch long. Inside this case, the true pupa forms. When fully formed, the adult fly breaks open the end of the pupal case and emerges. It is ready to mate within in a few hours after merging. The hardened larval skin, which is left behind still exhibits most of the characteristics which are used in larval identification; thus determination can often be made on the basis of the skin alone.

During warm weather, two or more generations of House Flies may be completed in a month. Normally the population builds up and is greatest in early fall months. The method of over wintering is not well understood, but in some areas populations develop indoors throughout the winter.

House fly eggs are laid in almost any warm moist material which will furnish suitable food for the growing larvae. Animal manure, human excrement, garbage, decaying vegetable material and ground contaminated with such organic materials are suitable materials. Although they are attracted to a wide variety of food materials, house flies have mouthparts which enable them to ingest only liquid materials. Solid materials are liquefied by means of regurgitated saliva. This liquefied food is then drawn up by the mouthparts and passed onto the digestive tract.

During daylight hours, House Flies will rest on floors, walls and ceilings indoors. Outdoors they will rest on plants, on the ground, on fence wires, garbage cans and other similar surfaces. At night, they will rest principally on ceilings, electric wires and dangling light cords indoors.

In all situations, House Flies prefer corners and edges or thin objects such as wires and strings. Night resting places are usually near daytime sources of food and are usually 5 to 15 feet off the ground.
