What If There Were No Cockroaches?

In this weekly series, Life’s Little Mysteries provides expert answers to challenging questions.

The sight of a cockroach makes just about every American shudder. We fear a roach infestation inside the walls. We fear that our house is dirty enough to sustain them. We fear that a cockroach might scurry across our faces at night, or, under cover of darkness, eat flecks of toothpaste off our toothbrushes.

These fears drive us to kill, kill, kill, and wish death upon the whole genus. But what if — through some means more effective than a nuclear bomb — cockroaches really were wiped out? Could we then rest easy? Or do we, in fact, somehow need these monstrous vermin?

We put the question to Srini Kambhampati, professor and chair of the biology department at the University of Texas at Tyler, and a world expert on cockroaches. Turns out, the sudden disappearance of Earth’s 5,000 to 10,000 cockroach species would have ramifications far beyond your filthy apartment. [Chocolate Allergies Linked to Cockroach Parts]

Worldwide, the insects are a significant food source for many birds and small insectivorous mammals, such as mice and rats. (Even humans eat them in some parts of the world.) None of these animals rely solely on cockroaches for food, Kambhampati said, so they probably wouldn’t go extinct, but their numbers would drop. Parasitic wasps, which specialize in parasitizing cockroach eggs, do rely entirely on the cockroach. «These would almost certainly become extinct,» Kambhampati told Life’s Little Mysteries.

If you can’t get very worked up about a dent in the rat population or the extinction of something called a parasitic wasp, consider this: A dearth of mice and rats would, in turn, impact the species that prey on them, including cats (both wild and domestic), coyotes, wolves and many reptiles, as well as eagles and other birds of prey. Many of those animals, we’re quite fond of.

Furthermore, the disappearance of cockroaches would mess with something truly vital for us all, called the nitrogen cycle.

«Most cockroaches feed on decaying organic matter, which traps a lot of nitrogen,» Kambhampati said. «Cockroach feeding has the effect of releasing that nitrogen (in their feces) which then gets into the soil and is used by plants. In other words, extinction of cockroaches would have a big impact on forest health and therefore indirectly on all the species that live there.»

In short, we really, really need cockroach poop.

Are Cockroaches Edible and Healthy to Eat?

by Ryan McCaffery | Last updated August 7, 2018 | 20 Comments

Cockroaches and other insects prepared for eating in Thailand

You probably consider eating a cockroach disgusting, because in Western society we do not value insects as a food source. We largely consider them dirty creatures that need to be eradicated, not eaten.

But do you know that people eat cockroaches in many countries and cultures around the world, especially in Asia?

Yes, cockroaches are edible and healthy to eat, provided they are prepared properly. They must be washed and thoroughly cooked prior to eating, to kill any bacteria on the cockroach.

Don’t eat a raw cockroach, though. Just as you wouldn’t eat raw chicken or beef. The germs need to be burnt off in the cooking process. Usually this is accomplished by frying the roaches in vegetable oil, which also gives them a crunchy and crispy texture.

For example, here in Thailand, they serve fried insects in many local dishes. They are also quite popular as a street food. Frequently, food carts can be spotted with the various types of insects on display.

Western tourists often gawk at this, and stop to take pictures — after overcoming their initial shock. Their apparent disgust sometimes offends or insults the locals, with whom fried roaches and crickets are quite popular.

I have to admit, I did a double-take the first time I saw a street food cart filled with various fried insects, including cockroaches. I did my best to be polite and not show it, but the strong cultural notions I brought with me from America made me look down on the practice of eating roaches, initially.

But since then I have become accustomed to the practice, and it doesn’t shock me anymore. In fact, I really think it is a quite sensible idea. If cockroaches are plentiful and cheap, and also tasty, why shouldn’t people eat them?

For most people, it’s just a matter of getting over your pre-existing hangups about cockroaches being dirty and disgusting. However, for some this may prove to be a high mental hurdle, indeed.

Cockroach nutrition: a cheap alternate source of protein

Roaches and insects are actually quite nutritious and high in protein. They are also plentiful and cheap, especially when compared to meat. Animal sources of protein can be quite costly, especially for many people of developing countries with lower incomes.

Do you know that over 50% of the world’s population lives on less than three dollars a day? This makes it impossible for the majority of the world’s population to eat meat on a daily basis, which poses a nutritional problem for them.

For this reason, the use of insects as food and as an alternative source of protein is being promoted by some researchers and nutritionists. Obviously, it is much cheaper to farm insects than it is to raise beef or chicken or pork.

Not only is it cheaper to eat cockroaches, it is also better for the environment. Less meat means less greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.

The locals here in Thailand claim that roaches taste great. That’s the reason they form the basis for a number of comfort foods in the local culture.

Admittedly though, I have not yet felt adventurous enough to take the plunge and eat a cockroach. Mentally and culturally, it’s just too far. I hope to one day get there, because from a logical perspective I think it makes sense.

But I take their word for it that roaches are delicious and completely healthy to eat. I think if I couldn’t afford to buy beef, chicken, and the more traditional forms of animal protein, it would definitely force me to be more open to eating insects as a replacement.

On a side note, the giant Madagascar hissing cockroach is a well-known species of edible cockroach. Supposedly, the taste of the hissing cockroach is reminiscent of greasy chicken.

Have you tried eating cockroaches? What do you think?

A Calgary woman is looking for a refund after discovering her newly moved-into apartment had a cockroach infestation; an issue plaguing the building for months, according to Alberta Health Services.

Yung Pham moved into the Continental Tower building on 9 Ave S.W on Sept. 4. While making dinner that evening, she found she had a pest issue.

“I went to make a sandwich, and put it on the counter when I went to the washroom to wash my hands,” Pham said. “Probably two minutes elapsed between putting the sandwich down and when I came back from the washroom — I saw 10 cockroaches on the sandwich.”

Frightened by the bugs, Pham said she didn’t want to risk staying in the apartment, so she decided to stay with a friend until the situation had been resolved.

Pham said she made multiple attempts to contact her landlord but claims her calls weren’t returned.

She contacted AHS to get a health inspection of the apartment, and that’s when she was told her complaint about cockroaches in the building wasn’t the first they’d received.

“He told me that this is not a new problem, this has happened before and he has been to the building with other issues that are not meeting code,” Pham said.

AHS confirmed to Global News that the organizations environmental public health division (EPH) is aware of several complaints regarding cockroaches at the building.

“EPH inspectors are working with the building’s management and the pest control operator contracted by building management to address this issue, and will continue to do so until it is resolved,” AHS issue management and media relations director James Wood said in a statement.

Pham said her landlord agreed to let her out of her lease and she moved out of the apartment on Sept. 13, but she didn’t get her rent or damage deposit back.

“I’m just looking at getting my rent deposit back, that’s all that I’m asking for,” Pham said. “All their requests have gone unanswered.”

Pham has since found a new place to live and is taking the situation as a learning experience, but is warning other people looking for apartments to be careful and do their research.

“Be very careful when you look, especially in the older buildings,” she said.

WRE Development, the company that manages the Continental Towers, did not respond to Global News’ request for comment.

Local pest control companies warn that cockroaches are becoming more of an issue in Calgary.

Bill Martin, owner of Martin’s Pest Control, said he rarely got calls for cockroaches when he first began working in the pest control field, but now it is a daily occurrence.

“They can carry bacteria so if you’ve got one cockroach in your house, that’s one too many. That’s when you’ve got to bring somebody in right away,” Martin said. “You don’t try to solve this problem yourself, ever.”

Martin said cockroaches carry pathogens and disease, and can quickly spread throughout the home when they’re treated with sprays found at hardware stores.

“They’re not really the kind of pests that you’d want to have in your house walking over your food or getting inside your cereal,” Martin said. “They’ll drop their egg casings inside your cereal, walk on your butter, get inside your bag of bread, they’ll walk over the rag you wipe your counter down with.”

If you have cockroaches in your home, Martin suggests contacting multiple pest control companies to get advice on the situation before getting them removed professionally.

The cockroach ( ゴキブリ, Gokiburi ? ) is an uncommon bug that can be found throughout the year in the GameCube games and Wild World, either inside the home or outdoors where it can be caught with a net. In subsequent games, cockroaches cannot be caught but can still be found inside neglected homes after a week of not playing.

In the outdoors they can be found resting on trees, flowers (GCN only), turnips and candy, but are only common on the latter two objects. They are generally regarded as being disgusting, most notably by Blathers, the curator of the museum and a sufferer of Entomophobia. They have the lowest selling price of any bug, at 5 Bells.

Capture quotes

When Capturing «Ewwwww. A cockroach! I’ll just put it in my pocket!» —Animal Crossing When Housecleaning «All the cockroaches are gone! Now everything is ALL BETTER!» —City Folk «Oh good! Alllllll of the pesky cockroaches are gone! I feel so much cleaner now!» —New Leaf

Japanese Quotes
When Capturing

«Gyaaaaaa! It’s a cockroach! What a speedster, though!» (translation)

«Gyaaaaaa, a cockroach!! I managed to catch it, though!» (translation) When Housecleaning

ll of the cockroaches are gone, how refreshing

very one of the cockroaches are gone, how refreshing

Donation to the museum

As with all bugs in the Animal Crossing series, the cockroach can be donated to the Museum by talking to Blathers, who will give a small talk on it.

In Animal Crossing

«Hoo. Uh. Huh-hoo? Is that a cockroach?! Oh, how repugnant! How foul! The vileness! The putrescence! Hoooo-ecchh! I will NEVER understand why we’re required to include cockroaches in our collection. It makes no sense. Well, who am I to question management? Hoo, indeed! And in any case, what’s one more filthy insect, eh wot? Hoooo, my. I hate this part. I hear it wriggling in there. «

In Wild World

Blathers, the curator of the museum, will barely try to contain his utter contempt for his least favorite of bugs:

«NOOOOOOO! Hoo-rrific! Please. I must protest! This is a cockroach, and a fearsome one at that! I’m terribly sorry for my outburst, but I simply abhor the wretched things. I often wonder aloud why cockroaches are even part of the collection, actually. The decision-makers atop the corporate ladder often seem quite daft, eh wot? Blech. well, I suppose I must take this.»

The cockroach can be found running around the first room of the bug exhibit. They will run away from the player, jumping when too close. If a player tries to step on it, a sarcastic reminder will appear, probably written by Blathers, stating:

«Dear patrons: This cockroach is a thoughtful donation from (player’s name). Please do not step on it.»

In Dōbutsu no Mori

Yu offers a cockroach to Ai when Ai helps him catch a Spider.

One cockroach makes a cameo in Dōbutsu no Mori, as one was caught by Yu as a present to Ai, who screamed in horror as it attached itself to her face.

Cockroaches in the house

An Infestation in Wild World.

In all the games, Cockroaches appear inside the player’s home if the game has not been played for a week or more, which induces the shocked emotion whenever the house is entered. These cockroaches will scuttle around and hide under furniture, and cannot be caught. To remove cockroaches they can be squashed by walking over them, and hidden ones must be revealed by altering furniture. On death, an «angel» image floats away.

If only a few of the cockroaches are killed, already dead cockroaches will «respawn» when entering the house again. If a cockroach is in the player’s house while a villager is present, the villager will appear horrified and leave.

In Animal Crossing, if the player has not the played the game for awhile, cockroaches can spawn if furniture is moved or placed when the max of two cockroaches have been killed.

Further information

The American Cockroach

The American cockroach, despite its name, is not native to the Americas, and was instead imported there via global trade networks, stowing away in the hulls of ships. They are worldwide in their distribution. They will feed on anything edible, and are capable of running at over 5km/h. They tend to only be active at night and are often considered a household pest. However, this species rarely causes an infestation, as it is so large, and its growth very slow, preventing the rapid reproduction that an infestation requires.
