Ultrasonic Bedbug Devices Debunked as Useless

Ultrasonic Bedbug Devices Debunked as Useless

Dec. 10, 2012 —В Despite their claims, ultrasonic devices won’t keep bedbugs at bay, a new study shows.

Bedbugs are wingless, rust-colored insects that are roughly the size of an apple seed. They don’t spread disease, but they do bite. Their bites can trigger allergic reactions, including welts and itching.

Recent media reports about bedbug epidemics have helped boost an industry filled with products and services that are designed to prevent bedbug infestations and/or get rid of these creatures if you already have them.

Now new research in the Journal of Economic Entomology shows that devices that produce sound waves do little to deter these creepy, crawly pests.

Researchers from Flagstaff, Ariz., purchased four ultrasonic devices online on Amazon.com and followed the instructions for use on their labels. During the experiment, they created an area where the device emitted sound waves, as well a silent comparison area.

There were no differences in the number of bedbugs observed in either area, suggesting that bedbugs were neither deterred by nor attracted to sound waves emitted by any of the devices.

As far back as 2001, the Federal Trade Commission sent warning letters to more than 60 manufacturers of these types of devices, saying that claims of effectiveness for these products must be supported by scientific evidence.

Ultrasonic Devices Don’t Repel Bedbugs

Many in the insect-control field are not surprised by these findings.

“Throughout the annals of pest control, ultrasonic devices have been evaluated against everything from rodents to roaches and fleas to mosquitoes,“ says Michael F. Potter, PhD. He is an entomologist at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. “Never have they proven themselves to be effective control tools. If anything, I would expect the bugs to utilize them as a [haven], since they often emit small amounts of heat, which serves as a short-range attractant to bedbugs.”

According to Potter, “the results are not surprising, but useful in the sense that they debunk another so-called secret weapon in the battle against bedbugs. As is often the case in pest control and life in general, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Susan C. Jones, PhD, agrees. She is an associate professor of entomology at Ohio State University in Columbus. “They are popular for all sorts of insects and rodents,” she says. But “the research does not support the claims that the manufacturer makes. They typically don’t work.”

Prevent Bedbug Infestations

These devices retail for $20 to $40. “I would take that money and use it to launder all clothes and put them in a sealed tote, because this would protect them more than [ultrasonic] detection,” Jones says.

Drying bedding and clothing at high temperatures for 20 minutes kills bedbugs, she says.

What else can you do?

“Bedbugs are a labor-intensive and time-intensive insect to deal with,” Jones says. If you suspect you have bedbugs, call a professional and they can tell you if it is a look-alike or a real bedbug.

Dini Miller, PhD, is an associate professor of urban entomology at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. “If these worked, we wouldn’t have a bedbug problem in the U.S.,” she says.

Unfortunately, “we don’t have a great answer for bedbugs right now,” she says. “We are pretty good at taking care of 12 bedbugs, but where things get tough is when you have 1,200.”

Heat and insecticides are the best available answers now, but they are not fail-safe.

The best way not to get a bedbug infestation is to keep the critters out of your home.

“It doesn’t matter if you notice a few when travelling or get bites,” Miller says. “You just don’t want them to come home with you.” Check yourself and any belongings before you come home.

Federal Trade Commission: «FTC Warns Manufacturers and Retailers of Ultrasonic Pest-Control Devices.»

Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Work? Here is the Truth

In the pest control industry, few products are as controversial as ultrasonic pest repellers.

Some homeowners claim they are the end all be all pest control product, while others say they had zero effect and are an absolute scam. As the controversy rages on, I’ll share my opinion on the topic and what I have learned by testing many of them.

We’re going to discuss the current products on the market and answer the most important question, do ultrasonic pest repellers work?

The short answer to the question “do ultrasonic pest repellers work” is there is no credible scientific evidence that suggests ultrasonic pest repellers work. Additionally, in 2003, the Federal Trade Commission demanded that one of the chief marketers of ultrasonic repellents, Global Instruments, discontinue their advertising campaigns. Specifically, the campaigns that claimed these devices actually worked as advertised.

There was one stipulation though. The ban was to continue until there was “credible scientific evidence” that ultrasonic repellers actually worked.

That ban? Yeah, still going strong. Uh-oh.

Effects on Rodents

In 1995, a report from the University of Lincoln, Nebraska examined six studies of ultrasonic repellers. These studies had tested the repellers on rodents. The report found that all tested products were “insufficient” at repelling rodents.

At a range of decibels and frequencies. Nothing worked on the rodents for longer than a few days. The rodents adjust to the sound!

The Environmental Protection Agency actually took legal action against the makers of the products. Those companies quit marketing their ultrasonic repellers due to significant fines from the court. Deja vu, anyone?

Effects on Mosquitoes

A few years after the ban was put in place, there was a meta-analysis (where you look over a bunch of similar studies) by research group Cochrane. This was important to Cochrane, which is normally interested in medicine, due to the implications for combating malaria.

Mosquitoes are a massive source of malaria. Malaria is a disease you don’t want. If you could get rid of Mosquitoes by hanging a few devices around mosquito-ridden areas, that would be a major help.

Cochrane examined ten studies that had all put electromagnetic waves to the test. These research projects tested for repellent effects and came up empty. All ten of them.

Yeah, so no good evidence that ultrasonic repellers actually worked. Double uh-oh. Cochrane actually discouraged future studies due to how little promise the existing research showed.

So at this point, you have companies still marketing ultrasonic repellers with promises that, by association, have medical applications… Promises that are scientifically incredible. Not great.

Here’s a fun quote:

[There is] no scientific evidence whatsoever [that ultrasonic repellers work on mosquitoes].

-Bart Knols, an entomologist from the advisory board for the Dutch Malaria Foundation

In 2005, the British magazine Holiday conducted its own series of tests on four different ultrasonic repellers. The magazine described them all as a “shocking waste of money.” The Federal Trade Commission cracked down again, scolding the makers of one ultrasonic repeller known as the “lovebug.”

The lovebug was withdrawn from the U.S. market due to concerns that the electromagnetic waves could be harmful to babies. It was designed to be attached to baby strollers. Oh, still available in Europe though.

Are you starting to develop a certain picture of these companies yet? We are.

Home Tests

Some buyers have taken to analyzing the products for themselves. This guy actually tested a few repellers to see whether they emit any sound at all.

Some of the repellers did not repel mice. Others did not emit any sound at all. There’s another video where he also tests them on bugs, attempting to repel them from a light source at night.

By the end of the video, you can see loads of moths and other buggies flapping madly around the repellers. It’s really quite funny.

It looks like some companies are literally selling you hunks of plastic with fancy names plastered onto them.

What Do the Reviews Say?

So here’s something interesting. The reviews appear somewhat mixed. With all that scientific data and legal action, you’d think ultrasonic repellers had emitted their last, right?

They are alive and apparently well on Amazon. So what’s the deal? For one, there is a bit of a fake online reviews epidemic. Amazon has gotten way better at this, but we took the liberty of investigating some of the most popular ultrasonic repeller reviews.

According to our favorite fake review detector, Fakespot, the review authenticity for most repellers ranges from a C to an F. Those are school grades, folks. F is for flunk.

Fakespot will give you a number of helpful tips, including notes that reviewers have a “suspiciously positive sentiment.” Or it will acknowledge some degree of deception involved, high or low.

Nearly all of the repeller products have had over a hundred reviews deleted by Amazon (good on them), and most of the company grades don’t get very high either.

In fact, it is normal for ultrasonic repeller companies to suffer terrible reliability scores overall. Many have review authenticities estimated at a rate of 60%. To be clear, that means 40% of their total reviews are unreliable.

Some companies actually had scores of 60% unreliable reviews.

Detecting the Fake Reviews

It’s not uncommon for people to see a product, notice a 5-star rating, and click” add to cart”. But this runs the risk of overlooking some real shady business.

Let’s check some repeller reviews. Here are a few actual examples:

Hello, My name is Blane and I’m a life-long resident of Southeastern Louisiana. I’ve been working as Pest Control Technician and Inspector at Advantage Services in Louisiana for over 1.5 years now.

I’ve worked in many other industries as well, including consulting, managing, as well as at the ground level in fields including Food Service, Corporate Automotive sales and finance.

I would be happy to help you out any way I can.

Ultrasonic Pest Control: Does it Really Work?

If you have pets or small children around, or otherwise are concerned for your own chemical exposure, you may be interested in purchasing an ultrasonic pest control device. Whether you want to repel rodents, insects or wild game, a device exists for you. Let’s see how they operate and if they accomplish their intended purpose.

How does ultrasonic pest control work?

Ultrasonic pest repellers, once plugged into an electrical outlet, operate by emitting short wavelength, high-frequency sound waves that are too high for humans to hear. The average young person hears sounds ranging from 20 to 20,000 Hz; whereas, a middle-aged person only hears up to 12-14,000 Hz. Animals and insects hear sounds in a much higher range. On average, ultrasonic devices emit a sound at about 65,000 Hz which, according to ultrasonic pest control device manufacturers, chases the pests away.

Keep in mind that if you did a few things around the home to deter pests, you might not need to resort to other methods. Sealing gaps, repairing screens and moving your firewood pile are just a few examples.

How long has ultrasonic pest control been around?

Are ultrasonic pest products cost-effective?

On average, an ultrasonic pest repeller lasts from three to five years. You know that it’s working if the LED light on the device is lit. You can buy a six-pack of these devices for less than $30. So, considering that sprays must be re-applied and traps need to be replaced frequently, yes, the ultrasonic device is cost-effective.

Does ultrasonic pest control really work?

Because these devices aren’t regulated by the EPA, some folks are skeptical of their claims. According to an article by the BBC, entomologist Bart Knols asserts there is “no scientific evidence whatsoever” that ultrasound repels mosquitoes. The results of scientific studies for such products are all over the map, showing some pests respondent while others not so much. However, many of these types of products on sites for online retailers have plenty of 5-star reviews.

Bed Bugs Not Repelled by Ultrasonic Devices

Lanham, MD; December 10, 2012 – Alternative means of controlling urban insect pests by using ultrasonic frequencies are available and marketed to the public. However, few of these devices have been demonstrated as being effective in repelling insect pests such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, or ants. Despite the lack of evidence for the efficacy of such devices, they continue to be sold and new versions targeting bed bugs are readily available.

However, according to a soon-to-be-published article in the Journal of Economic Entomology, commercial devices that produce ultrasound frequencies are NOT promising tools for repelling bed bugs. In «Efficacy of Commercially Available Ultrasonic Pest Repellent Devices to Affect Behavior of Bed Bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae),» authors K. M. Yturralde and R. W. Hofstetter report the results of their tests of four commercially available electronic pest repellent devices designed to repel insect and mammalian pests by using sound.

The devices, which were purchased online, were used according to manufacturers’ instructions. A sound arena was created for each ultrasonic device, in addition to a control arena which featured no sound. However, the authors found that there were no significant differences in the number of bed bugs observed in the control (no sound) and sound arenas, and that bed bugs were neither deterred nor attracted to the arena with the sound device.

The authors conclude that the ultrasonic devices may not have deterred or attracted bed bugs because they may not have produced the right combination of frequencies. Bed bugs are commonly exposed to frequencies made by their host species (humans) and by appliances and machines found in homes. Therefore, it may be possible that bed bugs also would exploit sounds made by their human hosts, such as breathing or snoring. Future studies of bed bug bioacoustics may be served well by using low-frequency sounds produced by host species.

So you have a pest problem. What are the alternatives? There are different chemical methods of extermination, also traps for pests such as rodents.

However, they do have a downside. They are either unpleasant because you have to clear up the dead bugs, or costly in using others to do it for you.

So have you considered a clean gentle alternative such as an ultrasonic insect repeller?===> https://amzn.to/2Nci9t6

These systems merely plug into a wall electrical socket. They release ultrasonic sound waves that are not heard by people or many pets, the exception being rodent type animals.

The sound these ultrasonic gadgets transmit repels the pests and drives them out of your home.

This appears like a great tidy gentle option to the mess of extermination and after all, when you get rid of bugs, there are constantly other pests waiting to take their place so continuous application of whatever indicates you use is required to keep the bugs under control.

This is also true of the ultrasonic devices but the distinction is that they only have to be plugged into the wall and switched on.

Of course, some pest control problems may have to be handled using a combination of methods due to the intensity of the problem, but with the use and low cost of ultrasonic pest repeller gadgets, it should be worth trying these with any insect control problem. After all, if they do solve your problem they will be the simplest cleanest and probably the cheapest method you have.

What The Heck Is An Ultra Sonic Pest Repellent-Neatmaster dual microchip ultrasonic pest repeller reviews

You’ve heard of a canine whistle, right? A dog can hear things we can’t, it’s exactly the exact same with Ultra Sonic Bug Repellents, but this time it doesn’t affect dogs and felines, rather rodents and insects.

Another example, have you ever been to a VERY loud concert and sat too close to the speakers, did it offer you a headache? Unless you’re a teenager (god love ’em) and into loud music you most likely wished to get up and run. Now, take that exact same example and scale it down to the insect and rodent level; the Ultra Sonic Insect Repellent was developed to be very uncomfortable to bugs and rodents without troubling humans or our 4 legged furry friends.

Electronic insect control or UltraSonic Bug Repellers aren’t something new, having been on the market in some kind for almost twenty years, however, just recently they have actually acquired prestige as a safe and eco-friendly way to deal with rodents and bugs.

The gadget is available in two ranges, Ultrasonic and Electro-magnetic and while there is a range of opinions about its effectiveness, Kansas State University did a thorough research study showing its value. The research study specified, “Ultrasound and Arthropod Bug Control confirmed that ultrasonic sound devices do have both a repellent result as well as a reduction in breeding and reproduction of different insects.”

While no insect control product is 100% reliable, studies have proven that UltraSonic Insect Repellers, when set up effectively, can help remove mice, rats, and bugs, while staying safe for household and family pets. The concept is simple, the technology distinct; contained within is the mechanism to release ultra-high frequencies well above the hearing series of people, dogs or cats, but tuned particularly to be disruptive to rodents and other pests.https://amzn.to/2NfCr50

Ultrasonic Insect Repellers were developed to be used securely in proximity to other electronic devices and incredibly easy to set up and operate, merely picking an offered outlet and they’ll begin their 24/7 defense of your office or home.

SETUP: It is recommended that any UltraSonic Bug Repellers be plugged into an unobstructed wall outlet and set up so the noise will ricochet or bounce off close-by tough surface areas.
CAUTION: While safe for pets and cats, need to you have family pet bunnies, hamsters or gerbils, it is recommended they be kept a safe distance away.
While UltraSonic Bug Repellers can help you achieve a pest complimentary office or home, it’s the smart owner who’ll go above and beyond and seal up gaps, keep garbage cans tightly closed and remove any food that may be left outside for family pets.

There are two types of people who’ll take advantage of UltraSonic Pest Repellers, those seeking to have an insect complimentary home and those wanting to do so in an environmentally safe manner. And naturally, those that may be seeking to achieve both. https://amzn.to/2NfCr50

What Is An Ultra Sonic Pest Repellent?

In spite of appearing like some futuristic device, The Neatmaster dual microchip ultrasonic pest repeller is rather basic, both in its function and operation. Plug in this bug control gizmo into any totally free socket and it’s going to send waves all over the room making critters spread in worry. These ultrasonic pulses are a great way to tell bugs and rodents to bug off and leave your home without causing any harm to its legal inhabitants. And though not every type of mite may be terrified by these impulses, most of the domestic bugs will flee cowering. Ultrasonic waves bounce around the room, reaching practically any living animal inside it, but impact just small beings that have a really specific biological makeup. Unless you’ve been born with ant-like antennas or super-precise sensors that pick up the lowest acoustic wave, the repellents won’t do a thing to you.

While these gadgets can be used both indoors and outdoors, you may not have electrical power readily available while out on a picnic, so consider using an insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay. And if a mouse appears identified to stay in your home, you might raise the stakes and set up a rodent trap to end your battle for good. But remember, it’s a desperate choice, only if your ultrasonic bug control device does not do its job.

How does Ultrasound work?

Ultrasound is a frequency of noise too expensive to be heard by humans. Ultrasound is shown by tough surfaces and taken in by soft surfaces. Rodents find this sound irritating and will prevent it if possible. The non-repetitive frequency levels cause extra discomfort and do not allow the rodent to end up being habituated to the noise.

For additional effectiveness, the loudest spike in sound replicates the noise of a dominant male rodent. Rodents are really territorial and will constantly battle to establish supremacy. The sound of a dominant rodent will prevent others from occupying a territory.

It is important to note that ultrasonic frequencies do not travel between walls. So for the most effective rodent control, ultrasonic units need to be put in numerous rooms.

How does Ultrasound affect rodents?

Ultrasound can drive away rodents by subjecting them to extreme auditory tension. This approach is a traditional animal behavior adjustment method.

Unlike traps and poisons, ultrasound does not kill rodents.

What are the most common mistakes people make with repellents?

Ultrasound Alone to Control Infestation: The most common repellent error is using ultrasound units alone to manage a recognized problem. Merely plugging in a Neatmaster dual microchip ultrasonic pest repeller sends rodents running for the door and out into cold winter season temperature levels if there is still enough food & shelter in your home or shed. It is necessary to also integrate sanitation and exclusion methods. Additionally, traps and baits need to be used in conjunction with Ultrasonic devices.

Inadequate Units are Used: Ultrasound does not take a trip through walls so it is important to place 1 in each space.

Poor Placement: Ultrasound is reflected by difficult surface areas and soaked up by soft surfaces. Placement behind a sofa will not allow waves to bounce around freely, triggering a hostile sound environment.
