Best Overall: Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs

One of the most popular flea collars online, the Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs is an effective choice that’s easy to use and kills fleas, ticks, and more. One collar offers eight months of protection, saving you the hassle of reapplying a topical treatment or giving your dog a pill. It’s non-greasy, odorless, and continuously releases low concentrations of its active ingredients across your dog’s skin and through their coat. It’s also water-resistant and will remain effective even after a bath or swim (although there may be an impact on how many months it lasts). Most importantly, it kills fleas within 24 hours of application, and reinfesting ones within two hours.

Customers write that the Bayer Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs is the first product they’ve used that actually kills fleas. It’s available in sizes for both large and small dogs and is equally effective against ticks. While it’s one of the higher-priced flea collars you’ll find, it’s our pick for the best overall product of this type.

Best Natural: Arava Flea & Tick Prevention Collar

Worried about using a flea collar that includes chemicals that could be harmful to small children (or even your pet)? There are plenty of collars using alternative formulations based on all-natural ingredients—and while they may not kill these pests, they can do a great job of repelling them. The Arava Flea & Tick Prevention Collar uses essential oils of geranium, peppermint, clove, and other non-scary ingredients, which work to keep fleas and ticks away from your dog’s fur. They’re released via absorption into the skin, with protection lasting for up to six months. Since it won’t kill ticks, it’s not appropriate for those dealing with an infestation—but it’s a great first line of defense, and can be effectively paired with a flea shampoo for a more complete protection plan.

Customers write that they were happy to discover a natural solution to flea control, allaying any fears of using it around kids or potentially causing harm to their pet. Just as important—it works, successfully keeping pests at bay even without the use of chemicals. While it has a noticeable smell, owners mention that it’s actually fairly pleasant and reflective of its botanical ingredients.

The Seresto 8 Month Flea & Tick Prevention Collar is designed for dogs 18 pounds and under and works to prevent fleas and ticks for up to eight months. If you’re hunting for a comfortable and effective collar for petite pups and puppies, the Seresto collar is a great choice. Owners appreciate how effective this little collar is, stating that it works through the height of flea season and is safe and irritant-free.

Best for Large Dogs: Mozart Flea and Tick Prevention for Large Dogs

If your furry friend is a large breed, you want a flea collar that not only prevents infestations but is comfortable for long term wear. The Mozart Flea and Tick Prevention for Large Dogs collar fits necks up to 25 inches—in other words, some pretty substantial pups. After a few days on your pup, it begins to work as the essential oils are distributed across your dog’s skin and coat. The collar is also water-resistant and easy to put on—just leave a couple of inches so it’s slightly loose on your dog’s neck. You can trim the excess length with a scissor to prevent your dog from chewing on it.

Reviewers note that not only is the Mozart flea collar effective, but it’s light, herbal scent is subtle and refreshing. Most importantly, it fits large breeds comfortably and securely.

Best Fast-Acting: Rolf Club 3D Flea & Worm Collar for Dogs

If your dog is itching and scratching, you don’t have time to wait around for flea products to kick in. The Rolf Club 3D Flea & Worm Collar for Dogs is a fast-acting collar that starts to penetrate deep and kill fleas at all stages of the lifecycle within 24 to 48 hours. Each collar provides six months of protection and fights ticks, mosquitos, lice, and fleas. It’s odorless and comes in three sizes, depending on the weight of your dog, and fits up to 30 inches around. Once you adjust the collar to your dog’s neck, you can cut off the excess material for a perfect, comfortable fit.

When your pet has an active flea infestation, using a fast-acting collar in conjunction with a flea shampoo or medicine can provide your pup much-needed relief and protect against future pests.

Best Reflective: Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea & Tick Collar with Reflect-X Shield for Dogs

Whether you and your pup enjoy late-night walks or you’ve got an escape artist on your hands, a flea collar with a reflective strip can help keep your dog safe in more ways than one. Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea & Tick Collar with Reflect-X Shield for Dogs protects your dog against fleas, ticks, and eggs for up to seven months, keeping your pup itch-free for over half a year. It’s water-resistant and is suited for dogs over 12 weeks old. But the best part? Each collar has a strip that reflects direct light up to 450 feet, giving it an extra layer of safety for your furry friend. Once on your dog, it will begin killing live fleas immediately and work to prevent nesting after three days.

Owners say the Hartz UltraGuard is a cost-effective way to combat fleas in pups of all sizes. They say the reflective strip is a major plus, but what’s most important is that it works.

Once you place an EasyDefense Collar Tag on your dog, it takes three weeks for it to start working, but will prevent fleas and ticks for up to a year when it’s worn every day. This natural repellant uses frequencies, or small vibrations, to irritate and repel pests. The frequencies of this tag will harmonize with your dog’s frequencies, so it won’t bother them. It’s safe for dogs of all ages, and won’t get in the way of harnesses or leashes.

Do Tick Collars Work? Review Of The Best Tick Collars For Dogs And Cats

Do tick collars work for cats?
Do tick collars work for dogs?
How long does the protection from tick collars last?

Last month, I had blogged about a severe tick infestation in my home. You can read the detailed steps we took to counter this massive infestation here. The problem is a lot less severe now, because we have our dogs wearing tick collars and we are also using weekly herbal and all-natural tick control remedies.

Integrated tick management approach is best

Tick collars are great but, like all other tick control products, you need to also use some other tick prevention. Now don’t get me wrong-I hate using too many chemicals on my pets. I mean, at one point, I was using tick spot treatment (Fipronil pipettes) which you apply on your pet’s collar bone and tail bone along with flea and tick collar. I was also bathing them with permethrin shampoos and dusting them with tick and flea powders. This was way too much chemical for me and needless to say I was spending huge amounts of money on all these products. I even had to have a pest control done in my home because the ticks were crawling all over the walls and I was seeing them on my bed, clothes etc. (Yikes!)

When our natural tick control failed

The thing is, and to be honest: we have spoiled our dogs. They sleep in our beds and you will find them on our couch, on the carpet and even on the foot-mats outside each bathroom ( and we have 3 of them!). Needless to say, the ticks were everywhere. Then, one of our friend’s dogs was hospitalized due to tick fever and he told us that the vet said there was a tick epidemic in our area! That was when I went back to tick collars, shampoos and powders.

So, back to my honest opinion about tick collars.

How long does it take for tick collars to work?

The previous tick collar around our dogs’ neck were useless ( I had put them on in November and they were rendered ineffective by the time it was January). So, while the label of the tick collar brand stated they last for up to 7 months, my experience was that they hardly last for 2 months. As far as the question of how long it takes for tick collars to show results is concerned: the answer is Almost IMMEDIATELY. Nearly all of the ticks on my dogs’ bodies were gone. We continued spraying the bedrooms with Tea Tree oil and Apple cider vinegar solution as well as lemon water (smells great). This helped the ticks crawl out of their hiding spots and we would immediately flush them down the sink/toilet or drown them in alcohol.

Do tick collars work for dogs?

So, the results were pretty good- between the professional chemical pest control, the tick collars and our homemade tea tree oil and lemon spray-almost all ticks had vanished within a week. Of course new ones keep hatching but we make sure our pets are bathed with permethrin shampoos weekly, so the ones hatching on their bodies are taken care of immediately. Also, and this may be due to the collars or our other tick control efforts; the ticks that I do find on my babies are usually dead.

Are tick collars safe?

Tick collars from the best brands are generally safe. One of my dog tends to scratch a lot once I put on a new collar on her. She seems to shown mild allergic reaction each time she is on a new collar. But this side effect is usually temporary and she is okay within a day or two.

Advantages of using tick collars for dogs

  • Tick collars work immediately. You will see all the ticks, fleas and lice leaving your dog’s body within a day.
  • Adjust them to fit any size or breed. (You get special collars for cats-so do avoid using tick collars meant for dogs on cats and vice a versa). I have some best tick collars for dogs and cats reviews below to help you choose.
  • Apart from ticks, collars help prevent other parasitic infestations like mange, lice and of course, fleas.
  • Dog tick collars are safe to use around pets (except birds, fish and bees) as well as humans. Make sure your kids wash their hands after petting the animals using tick collars.

Disadvantages of tick collars

  • Tick collars do not last long- 2 months max is what I have seen.
  • You might still see engorged ticks on your pets but most will be dead.
  • Tick collars should not come in contact with water. You must remove them each time you bathe your dog.
  • Not convenient for pets that are super active or if you live in wet areas.
  • Dog tick collars from top brands are expensive but they may be cheaper compared to pills and spot treatments. You also need to use other tick control methods (spot treatments, sprays and powders) alongside in case of heavy infestation.

Dog tick collar reviews

I have used the Bayer brand of tick collar dog and although they state the protection is for 8 months, I have had to change the collar in 2 months. Here are some of the other best tick collars for dogs and cats:

This is a bestselling product for tick control on cats which has received great reviews from cat owners. It seems to work well on fleas. Seresto collar works well and within 24 hours your baby will be free of ticks and fleas! This brand of cat tick collar is known to give lasting protection for up to a year!

I love all products from Virbac-especially their flea and tick shampoos. My pets do not suffer from ringworm or coat dryness which is usually the case with flea and tick shampoos from other brands. I have not tried this collar yet but plan too soon. As per reviews from other pet owners, these best dog tick collars last for almost 3 months. If ticks are a huge problem in your area, this is a must have product. It is also a lot cheaper compared to other brands. On the downside, the product smells a bit, but that definitely means it is working.

This is a relatively new brand in the best tick collars for dogs. It offers 100% tick and flea protection for up to 3 months. SOZO flea collar prevents ticks, fleas and lice from reaching the dog’s head while protecting the entire body as well. It is easy to put on and adjust. For most users it lasted for a month.

This seems to be a really affordable brand in the dog tick collar range. The company claims that this collar is water resistant – a blessing for swimmers! Hartz collars are reflective and bright orange in color in case your dog likes to go on night time walks. They last for about 7 months (a claim I am skeptical about). Some owners felt that the product was not effective on account of skin rashes. Also, in some dogs, the fleas and ticks only migrated to the animals’ butts.

And that concludes my review of do tick collars work? I would like to hear your thoughts-so do comment below about your experience of using tick collar for dogs.

Over time we’ve come up with various ways of getting these little critters to leave our dogs alone, some of which are more effective than others. We’ve got a whole range of lotions and potions that require a manual application, we’ve got natural alternatives like garlic that simply don’t work, and we’ve got the humble flea and tick collar too.

Collars have several advantages over other kinds of treatment method, the most obvious of which is that they are a true “set and forget” solution. You put the collar on, and the job is done – or at least that’s the idea…

There are countless flea and tick collars out there in bargain bins across the country that claim to provide protection on a budget – but most of them simply don’t get the job done properly. That’s where Seresto comes in.

They’re the most reputable and respected flea and tick collar manufacturer in the world. Their products are almost always the brand that veterinarians will recommend due to their literally unbeatable performance – but they are also the most expensive too…

Are they worth the additional cost?

Well, today we’re going to find out in this Seresto flea and tick collar review.

Let’s get started.

Seresto Flea and Tick Collar Coupons

We were unable to locate any coupons from Seresto themselves (online or offline). But you can still save on their products if you’re clever about it.

The best way to do this is to look for pet stores that have discounts or promotions running that offer savings on a wide range of products. These discounts are usually more generous if you’re a new customer (because they want repeat business) but there are still decent offers out there for existing customers too.

At the moment the best discount we’ve found is at who are offering an incredible 30% off almost all of their products – which includes these excellent collars from Seresto.

For other cheaper brands of flea and tick collar, a 30% saving would be minimal (as they are cheap already). But when you’re buying a collar like this that costs over $50, it’s not an insignificant saving.

Seresto Flea and Tick Collar Review

Hopefully, now you know a little bit more about the kinds of problems that ticks and fleas create and the different ways of solving them. Let’s take a look at Seresto and their excellent dog collar.

This is one of the highest rated flea and tick collars on the market, it’s also one of the most expensive. However, you really do get what you pay for when it comes to collars like this, and this is a premium product, with a premium price tag. It provides performance on a level that cheaper products cannot even hope to compare with.

It’s one of the better kinds of collar that we talked about earlier that will kill current infestations and make your dog seem like a bad target for fleas and ticks looking for their next host too.

One of the biggest advantages that you’re getting with this collar is that it doesn’t require a flea or tick to bite before it takes effect. Cheaper collars work in a reasonably counterintuitive way, the chemicals inside them often don’t harm the pests that have infested your pooch until they decide to bite and feed on the skin that’s covered in pesticide. This means it’s uncomfortable for your dog while the treatment is taking effect – which isn’t ideal.

Seresto’s collar doesn’t’ work like this – it will kill fleas and ticks on contact, without having to wait for them to decide to make your pooch their next meal.

As you’d expect from a product of this quality it’s a comprehensive solution that will kill adult fleas and ticks, alongside any eggs, larvae or nymphs that haven’t fully matured yet. This ensures you can get the problem under control and stop it from reoccurring at the same time.

It’s a non-greasy collar that’s completely odorless too – which is a big benefit. Cheaper collars use smelly chemicals that are visibly oily on your dog’s coat. The advanced formula that you find in the Seresto is virtually undetectable, you and your pooch are not going to notice any change in coat consistency, color, or odor whatsoever.

The fast acting formula will get to work within 24 hours, killing any fleas in your dog’s coat that shouldn’t be there, the repellent action we talked about earlier will start protecting your pooch even quicker than this (within 2 hours).

It takes a little longer to provide protection against ticks, the treatment takes 48 hours to start the mass murder of these little monsters and will repel other ticks that want a new home within 6 hours.

It’s a completely water-resistant formula, which is super impressive considering it’s not an oily product like some cheaper water resistant collars. It can even provide protection after you use your normal dog shampoo when you’re giving your dog a bath – just be sure not to bathe them more than once a month.

There’s no getting around the fact that this isn’t a cheap collar, but if you want proper performance and protection – there’s no other alternative to a Seresto product.

It’s one of the most commonly recommended collars by veterinarians for a reason, and considering it provides 8 months of protection – it’s not like this is going to be a regular expense anyway.
