Mosquito larvae, commonly called «wigglers,» live in water from 4 to 14 days depending on water temperature.

Larvae must come to the surface at frequent intervals to obtain oxygen through a breathing tube called a siphon. They are constantly feeding since maturation requires a huge amount of energy and food. They hang with their heads down and the brushes by their mouths filtering anything small enough to be eaten toward their mouths to nourish the growing larvae. They feed on algae, plankton, fungi and bacteria and other microorganisms. They breath at the water surface with the breathing tube up breaking the water surface tension. One mosquito species larva feeds on larvae of other mosquitoes: Toxorhynchites, the largest mosquito known, are predators of other mosquito larvae sharing their habitat. Their larvae are much larger than other mosquito larvae.

During growth, the larva molts (sheds its skin) four times. The stages between molts are called instars. At the 4th instar, the usual larva reaches a length of almost 1/2 inch and toward the end of this instar ceases feeding. When the 4th instar larva molts, it becomes a pupa.

Mosquitoes cause more deaths than any other animal in the world. They are carriers of diseases, including malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever which can be transmitted to humans and animals when the mosquito feeds on blood.

Only the female mosquito feeds on blood and when they are not trying to produce eggs, females are happy to stick to eating nectar from plants like the male does.

When a female feeds on blood their abdomen expands and can hold up to 3 times its own body weight in blood.

Mosquitoes prefer O-type blood, people with high body heat, pregnant women and heavy breathers. Many of these reasons are because mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide (CO2) from up to 100 feet away. Which is a reason why they circulate around our heads where we exhale CO2.

Females live for two weeks to a month while males usually live for just a week.

Like other flies, mosquitoes go through four lifecycles stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Female mosquitoes tend to lay their eggs in stagnant water, even very shallow puddles are suitable.

Some mosquito can fly for up to four hours continuously at 1 — 2 km/h (0.6 — 1 mph), they are however one of the slowest flying insects.

Mosquitoes can beat their wings between 450 and 600 times per second!

Fish, dragonfly and other aquatic insects are predators of mosquitoes.

Mosquito Life Cycle: What’s their lifespan?

Back in science classes during the school days, most of us have studied about the basic life cycle of mosquitoes. This article will cover more details like: How long can mosquitoes live? how long does it take for them to grow from one stage to the other? Where do mosquitoes lay eggs? and more…

There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes in the world, with about 170 of them can be found in the United States.

Here’s the deal – Mosquitoes don’t live very long .

In fact, the entire mosquito life cycle can be counted in days ( hold on to your celebrations though ). A fully developed male mosquito last less than a week, while the females can live up to a couple of months (only with ideal conditions).

The problem why there’s still so many mosquitoes flying around despite their short lifespan is that they are extremely capable of living and surviving under difficult conditions. In fact, mosquitoes have been around for over 200 million years ( since the dinosaurs era! ). The lifespan length of mosquito and length of each stage in their life varies between species. It is also dependent on the environmental conditions (such as the moisture and temperature in the surrounding).

Mosquito Life Cycle

Mosquito’s life cycle is made up of four stages: 1) the egg, 2) larval, 3) pupal and 4) adult stage.

1) Egg Stage

Mosquito lifespan begins when the eggs are laid on stagnant water and most of them hatch into larvae in 1 to 3 days (depending on the temperature).

The tiny Mosquito eggs are white when they are first laid before slowly darken to near black within 24 hours. Eggs laid on land (i.e moist soil) can last for up to a year before hatching (after the ground is flooded again).

2) Larva Stage

This is the baby stage of a mosquito. The mosquito larva lives hanging upside down at the surface of the water and takes in oxygen using their breathing tubes located at their tails. At this stage, they feed on microorganisms (like algae & bacteria) in the water and some species might even eat each other.

They move in the water by propelling themselves in a twitching motion (that’s why they are known as wigglers at this stage). At this stage, they vulnerable to predators like fish and birds.

Most larvae keeps growing at this stage for about a week, shedding their skins about 3 to 4 times before growing into a mosquito pupae ( this process is known as molting ). The warmer the environment, the faster the mosquito larvae will grow.

By the last shedding, the larva can reach almost ¼ inch long and enters the pupal stage within 7 to 10 days.

3) Pupa Stage

The mosquito pupae (also known as tumbler) doesn’t eat or do anything. They simply swim around in the water all day.

They have short and curved bodies with a large head on one end and flippers on the other end to help them swim. They live near the water surface and inhale oxygen through their little tubes (also known as trumpets).

When disturbed, the pupae will decent downwards to the deeper depth and slowly rise back to the water surface. Like the mosquito larvae, the purpae is also vulnerable to predators birds and fishes. Human acts can also post a risk to them (i.e. a layer of floating substance like oil in the water can kill them as they are unable to get to the water surface for oxygen).

It takes about 3 to 4 days for the mosquito pupal to grow and develop into the adult mosquito depending on the temperature of the water which it grows in. It is during this stage where the pupal uses air pressure to split open the cocoon and emerge as an adult mozzie.

Side note: Both the larvae and pupae cannot survive for long without water, hence should a water source dried up before they grew into adult mosquitoes, they will die.

4) Adult Stage

At the final adult phase, the newly emerged mosquito will rest on the water surface until their wings dry out and body harden before taking off (that’s one reason why they lay eggs in still water).

Life of a Grown-up Mosquito

Adult mosquitoes have two large compound eyes, an antennae and a proboscis (elongated nose or snout) on it’s head. They also have 3 pairs of legs and a pair of wings.

Both male and female mosquitoes live with only two purposes in life – to breed and to feed .

Mating begins as soon as in the first few days after emerging from the cocoon, as the male mosquitoes need about a day for their reproductive parts to fully develop.

The male mosquitoes locate the females for mating by paying attention to the sounds produced by their wings.

After mating, male mosquitoes can live 3 to 5 days while the females live considerably longer (depending on the temperature and moisture it’s living environment). Under ideal conditions, females may live till 1 to 2 months.

Of course, there are plenty of predators like bats and birds that feed on mosquitoes. Pesticide sprays, traps and foggers are also used by us to combat them.

Mosquitoes don’t travel much and typically move no more than a mile from where they were hatched. They are slow fliers (about 1 mph) and can easily be blown away by wind.

Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectar while females extract blood from humans (and animals) to help develop and nourish their eggs ( see this article to find out what do mosquitoes eat ).

Where Do Mosquitoes Lay Eggs?

Most of the female mosquitoes can lay batches of eggs of around 60 to 100 each time. The eggs actually float together on the surface of the water like a raft. Females usually lay eggs at night and can give birth up to three times in their lifespan.

After obtaining a blood meal, the female mosquito lays eggs directly on or near water. Mosquito eggs need water to develop, hence anywhere with the water that is not likely to be disturbed for a week or two are ideal breeding grounds for them.

Typical breeding grounds for mosquitoes include: stagnant ponds with little life, water collected in tree holes, condensation found inside an old tire, rainwater collected in flower pots.

Some mosquito species also anticipates the next rise in water, laying their eggs on moist and soaked soil close by. If the soil remained wet enough, for a duration that’s long enough for the eggs to hatch, the life cycle of the mosquito will start.

This is what the future will look like. The Fast Mosquito Motorcycle will have no need for tires or even wheels. This Motorcycle will hydroplane above any surface very similar to a hovercraft type vehicle. However this is not a hovercraft as it will have the maneuverability of a mosquito and will handle like a motorcycle, allowing the operator to lean in corners. It will even feel like a motorcycle even though it will float above the surface of the earth. In fact, this design will allow the operator to float above any land or water surface, eliminating the need for roads or roadways. Its floating ability will be limited to only two feet, so as to keep it in compliance with road and aviation laws.

More good news, The Fast Mosquito Motorcycle will never need gas, oil or fuel. It may sound too good to be true, but, the simplicity of this design will change how we think about engine dynamics. We can’t reveal all our secrets, but we can tell you a little about how this revolutionary system will work.

Continuous Magnetic Infusion – CMI-MosquitoTech

We call our system, Continuous Magnetic Infusion – or CMI-MosquitoTech. This is how the system works. We start with two rotating turbo charging cylinders of magnetic bars. The magnets are reversed so they oppose each other, creating a forceful, pulsing, push and pull effect. With the use of springs and ball bearings to separate the pull and plunge of the continuous clashing and repelling magnets, we now create enough movement to create energy. There is enough energy transfer to spin the two cylinders that are incased in a stable outer cylinder. The cylinders spin in opposite directions creating a vortex of power and energy. This vortex also spins belts and fans that direct the wind flow created by the vortex spin. The spinning jet fans are what propel the motorcycle to move forward. Using this same concept of CMI-Mosquito Tech underneath the vehicle, the jet fans allow the motorcycle to float and hover above any surface. The speed and height of the motorcycle will be determined by how close the opposing magnetic plates are to each other. For example; the turbo will spin faster as the opposing magnetic plates come closer to each other and the turbo will slow down as the plates separate from each other. The flotation of the motorcycle will be lifted by two turbo jet fans using the same system of opposing magnets. One turbo jet fan cylinder underneath the motorcycle in the front and one turbo jet fan cylinder underneath in the rear. These magnetic plates will be set to allow the motorcycle to float to a limit of only two feet above the surface of the road. Also these cylinders will be shorter and wider for this use. When the turbo jet cylinders are turned off the motorcycle will set itself down on its four prong stand. The only sound the motorcycle will make is the buzz of the rotating turbo jet cylinders and fans and a mild clatter of the magnets movement. The turbo jet fans will scream a bit when the Motorcycle reaches speeds of 100 to 200 miles per hour. Without a limiter the motorcycle could reach a speed range of 400 to 500 mph or even faster, competing with conventional jet engine speeds.

The speed of the motorcycle can be controlled in two ways. The cylinders and jet fans can be slowed by separation of the magnets. The motorcycle can also be slowed or have its speed increased by controlling the size of the jet fan exhaust. A smaller exhaust opening in the outside stable cylinder will make the motorcycle go faster as the propulsion is stronger as the air is condensed. When the exhaust is opened wider and side vent are opened, the propulsion is weekend and the motorcycle is slowed. Braking will work very much like a propeller on a boat. When braking, the propeller, or turbo jet fans in this case, will reverse themselves, thus stopping the motorcycle.

All the electronics, including the starter will be powered by small solar panels about the size of the solar panel on your calculator. The turbo jet fans will power the electric system after the engine is started.

Thanks to this new magnetic technology we will have a fast flying motorcycle that will never need gas, oil or fuel and no pollution will come from the exhaust. In theory the CMI–Mosquito Tech system could be applied to all of our current flying and driving vehicle; Private and commercial jets, helicopters and drones. Airplanes will become obsolete overnight. Long landing strips and airports will not even be needed as the flying object we chose to fly will be able to land anywhere we chose to land, thanks to its ability to hover. This truly is the future of clean energy propulsion.

The Bones, Body and Skin

The frame and body will need to be as light and thin as a mosquito’s wings. The frame will have to be strong and flexible, this is where bioscience and technology come together. Carbon fiber and light metals are great for conventional motorcycles, but are to weak and heavy for our use. Thanks to biosciences, we have discovered that a blend of bamboo chips ground to a fine powder, mosquito larva and cells from mosquito wings blended with a strong adhesive is much stronger lighter and more flexible then even the strongest metals. Bioscience has found mosquito cellulite to be the lightest and strongest organic substance per weight material available for structured use of physical materials. Also, it can easily be cloned. When this mixture of plant and insect are blended into a liquid, it can be formed onto any shape or design. It can be pored into a mold and formed like metals or it can be stretched into sheets like a carbon fiber. The turbo cylinders and fans will be made of this strong material blend. Its strength lightness and durability make this a perfect choice for our Fast Mosquito Motorcycle Design. The outer cylinder will also function as the frame of the motorcycle. The rider will sit on top of the outer cylinder, which will be about as wide as a conventional motorcycle.
