Grasshopper Website FAQ

What is Grasshopper?

Grasshopper is the best way to learn to code for beginners. With fun, quick lessons on your phone or desktop, Grasshopper teaches adult learners to write real JavaScript. It’s currently available for free on Desktop, Android, and iOS. Grasshopper is a Code with Google program.

What can I expect to learn using Grasshopper?

Grasshopper covers the foundations of JavaScript, how to create animations with code, teaches solving problem techniques needed for technical interviews and introduces how to build a website with HTML and CSS. Here’s what each course covers:

  • Fundamentals — How code works, calling functions, variables, strings, for loops, arrays, conditionals, operators, objects, and how all these things work together.
  • Fundamentals II — String and array methods, creating functions, introducing recursion and callbacks, and importing libraries.
  • Intro to Interviewing — Decompose and model real world problems so that they can be solved using code, utilizing computational thinking.
  • Animations I — Drawing shapes using the popular D3 library, defining functions, callback functions, and animations.
  • Animations II — Creating more complex functions using D3 and integrating JavaScript features.
  • Array Methods — Using multiple JavaScript array methods, such as indexOf, shift, includes, splice, map and reduce.
  • Using a Code Editor — Introduction to a traditional style code editor (or IDE)
  • Intro to Webpages — Covers basic HTML and CSS, then uses JavaScript to build an interactive webpage.

By the end of using Grasshopper’s current curriculum, you should be familiar with core programming concepts, be comfortable solving problems with code and be able to build a simple webpage.

What should I do after I use Grasshopper?

The world is your oyster! Grasshopper should give you the foundational skills you need to continue your journey in learning to code, which can take many different routes. That said, if you’re looking for a recommendation, we’ve put together some suggested next steps here.

Does the little grasshopper in the lessons have a name?

The grasshopper’s name is Grace! The name Grasshopper pays honor to Grace Hopper, one of the early pioneers in computer programming.

Who is the team building Grasshopper?

Grasshopper is a Code with Google Program, a workshop for experimental projects. Our entire team is passionate about removing barriers to accessing coding education, and we love working on Grasshopper. To find out more, check out our About Us page.

Will Grasshopper remain free to use?

Yes! We firmly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to code, regardless of their means. We’re committed to keep Grasshopper free to use.

Should I expect more lessons? What will it be?

We’re constantly working on expanding our curriculum. In the past couple months, we’ve launched new coursework around technical interviewing (Intro to Interviewing) along with courses for web development (Intro to Webpages) on an entirely new surface (desktop). We definitely have more work to do and we will continue to prioritize content that is relevant for beginner coders. Since we have an experimental approach to making content to keep our students motivated, we don’t announce new material too far ahead of time, but stay tuned for more!

What languages does Grasshopper support?

Given that we’re still in the early stages of development, the Grasshopper team is focused on providing an English-only experience right now.

Will Grasshopper expand to teaching other programming languages?

Grasshopper currently teaches using the popular programming language JavaScript, used by more than 70% of professional developers. Grasshopper uses JavaScript to teach fundamental programming concepts that are universal to almost all programming languages. Right now, Grasshopper is focusing on deepening our students’ understanding of these fundamental coding concepts, and we don’t yet have plans to expand our support to other programming languages.

you are young grasshopper, but you will learn

You are young grasshopper, but you will learn.

Various people have asked me about the name of the site and my username.

The idea for the site title came from the TV show “Kung Fu” where David Carradine is the Kung Fu student Kwai Chang Caine travelling through the Wild West as he seeks his half-brother, Danny. Kwai is armed only with his martial arts skill learnt as a Shaolin monk at the feet of Master Po.

Master Po calls his young student “Grasshopper” in reference to their first meeting. On discovering that the Master was blind Caine comments how bad this must be. Master Po however pointed out that despite having sight the young Caine was unaware of the grasshopper at his feet. He says, “you are young Grasshopper, but you will learn.”

I know it is perhaps obvious but whilst many have power and may use it foolishly there are times when we should return to the basics and be aware of the grasshopper beside us we are no longer aware of.

My nickname, given to me by one of my “Masters” is ffolliet. I use it in so many places. Looking for a new nickname to designate my new status I have taken inseiffolliet. “Insei” is Japanese for postgraduate student or even more specifically for the students of the game of strategy “Go” considered by some to be of the most important skills a civilized person could learn in the Eastern World.

There is much I have to learn about the “game of surrounding”.

The majority of features are accessible through the Grasshopper apps (available on iOS, Android, and desktop). Grasshopper can also be used without the app, to forward calls to a landline. Grasshopper Connect is only available as an app on iOS and Android.

No. Grasshopper is a virtual phone system that provides a number of great features, including a second phone number, but you still need a service provider, and a main phone number, where your Grasshopper calls will be forwarded.

Both apps provide you with a second phone number. Grasshopper is a full virtual phone system (calls, texts, custom greetings, extensions, inbound fax, and more). Grasshopper Connect is a unified messaging platform (combining calls, texts, and emails from each contact into one conversation) to help you stay organized. Compare the two here.

All of our plans include unlimited minutes! Your app usage is restricted only by your carrier’s dataplan.

Grasshopper primarily uses your service provider’s cellular network for incoming and outgoing calls. Grasshopper does offer both WiFi and VoIP Calling options, but they are not the default.

The quality and reliability is the exact same as your service provider, since we use their network for all your calls!

Ratings and Reviews

Really great in teaching the fundamentals

Usually when downloading an application, I like to look at different viewpoints that other people had on the application. Once I downloaded the application, I honestly wanted to see all that this application had to offer. Although I already know how to program in different languages, I wanted to see how this application can help me jumpstart my programming language pool with JavaScript. Honestly, I am mind blown with this app. I ended up taking the long route and starting from the very beginning when opening the app just to see how Grasshopper would navigate me through the path. I recommend this app to anyone that is curious about JavaScript whether you’re just a beginner, or you want to refresh your memory on some concepts. Grasshopper will teach you what is necessary in an organized fashion.

Reading the few reviews that gave this app a bad review stating that they learned nothing completely missed the fact that this application teaches you the proper syntax for JavaScript. While this application does focus on more drag-and-drop mechanics, it shows you how to think logically.

It’s pretty good if you really understand things but the thing I don’t like is it does not really make sense for me because they just give you information that you expect to memorize. Another problem is if your supposed to type something like ‘eggs’ it does not really show what your supposed to type but only in the beginning. Things that I do like about this app is they at least try to give us information about coding then you just doing it which will help. What I also like is you do not need a email, profile, or to be giving them your information to be able to start coding! The last thing I like is that they give you short mini quizzes for all the stuff they taught you which will help you see what you are struggling with. So overall I will give it 3 stars since there was 2 problems but over all it was a nice app. I also did a mini paragraph since I’m rushing.

Actual Honest Review

For those who truly want to proliferate their understand of programming and not just quickly memorize syntax, but completely understand the true fundamental of programming, which is the ability to solve a problem with an effective solution you can think of on your own; This app is an absolute waste of your good time.

Not at all for a beginner, in fact you’ll find yourself in absolute frustration especially if you’re eager to have the ability to fill a software development role; since there’s apparently “so many unfilled positions”. Without a doubt, even Google themselves, who is the genesis of this app, would turn away candidates completing these grasshopper courses alone.

This course has absolutely no structure and will teach certain elements of programming at random, and get you more comfortable with googling solutions on stack overflow then reading and understanding the documentation of the language.

I find it atrocious how such a poorly designed tool for teaching was designed and promoted, quite literally just for tracking and recording of user data.

Shame on you google, you make an absolute mockery of all the software devs and programmers out their, and you’re wasting good peoples with genuine interest in the fields time.
