Cockroach Argus: Using Effective Traps and Gel

>if a single beetle crawls out it will kill the bees that touch it transferring the insecticide.

That’s what I have always though when I see the CD case trap and the corrugated plastic Fat Bee Man trap.

There are enough other effective traps that you don’t need to put pesticide in the hive. And the pesticide traps are not that effective.

I put Swiffer pads in the SBB it catches a few. IMO if your hive is strong you don’t need to worry about beetles. And if your hive is weak it does not matter how many traps you use.

Come live in Florida or Georgia and your idea of when to worry about SHB will change dramatically.

I won’t tell it’s illegal but it’s illegal.

Do what you want but I in good conscience couldn’t sell honey out of a hive that has had an off label pesticide in it.

I’m in Georgia as well and despise the beetle as much as the next guy. I find that strong colonies, full sun, judicious use of oil tray bottom boards and beetle jail traps keep them at bay. It’s more work to swap out bottom boards and fool with traps on every inspection but it is what it is.

Come live in Florida or Georgia and your idea of when to worry about SHB will change dramatically.

I am sure I would. But I would also use oil traps in all my hives.

I wholeheartedly agree about the use of pesticides in the hive. Someone in NW Florida told my niece that is what she should do and I was just wandering if anybody on the forum was using it. I personally use beetle jails with Mann Lake scented oil.

I use diatomaceous earth in both my beetle blasters and bottom traps. I also do frame by frame shake outs if the SHB get to bad. I shake each frame from the top box onto a full bottom trap. The bees fly back to the hive and the SHB get trapped. I pull the whole top box off first without smoking and place it on a third full bottom trap Before beginning the shake out.

A couple of things to consider before using Advion Syngenta Gel:

— The active ingredient is Indoxacarb. Indoxacarb’s effectiveness against roaches is due in part to the fact that it remains active after ingestion. Other roaches eat the dead roach, and are killed by the Indoxacarb. What does this mean for the beekeeper? If a hive beetle ingests the Indoxacarb and makes it out of the bait trap into the hive, then the still active Indoxacarb goes with it (Indoxacarb Insecticide Wipes Out Entire Cockroach Generations (http://www.science20.com/news_releases/indoxacarb_insecticide_wipes_out_entire_cockroach_ generations)).

— Indoxacarb is lipophilic, so it would be reasonable to suspect that it could be absorbed, and retained, in beeswax.

Cockroach Traps

What Are Cockroach Traps?

Homeowners looking to identify a possible infestation can use cockroach traps. Most of these devices feature bait or a type of attractant that lures the pests and adhesive that prevents them from moving when coming into contact with the trap. Residents can place traps indoors or outside.

Not a Control Method

Sticky cockroach bait traps are a good monitoring tool, but not a good way to get rid of cockroaches. Based on the limitations of their size and design, they often fail to catch more than a few insects at a time. However, when employed in the right way, a cockroach trap can still play a role in dealing with pest infestations.

How to Use Cockroach Traps Correctly

The best time to use a cockroach trap is in the identification stage. Homeowners who don’t know the cause of an insect problem or aren’t sure where the pests are hiding can lay down sticky traps. These devices catch the offending pests, confirming not only the presence, but also the relative number of cockroaches in the location where the trap was placed.

Location is key with a cockroach bait trap. Several spots in homes typically have high pest activity. Underneath kitchen appliances and in cupboards, bathrooms, and basements are all good choices. Small, dark droppings may mark frequent cockroach hangouts.

Removal

People who find cockroaches in their homes and gardens should contact pest control professionals to discuss the next steps. Orkin offers a variety of removal services that target cockroaches where they live and offer homeowners relief from the obnoxious pests.

How Advion Cockroach Gel Baits Works

The brief delay in mortality caused by the active ingredient Indoxacarb allows cockroaches to consume the bait and return to the harborage site to contaminate other cockroaches resulting in significant reduction in infestation levels. Each roach that comes in contact with bait can contaminate up to 40 other roaches by way of contact, feces, or the other roaches feeding on its poisoned carcass. This domino effect knocks out roach populations at an incredible rate.

For more information on eliminating roach infestations, see our guide on how to get rid of roaches.

Target Pests

German, American, Australian, Smoky-Brown, Brown, Asian, and Brown-Banded species of cockroaches

ROACHES CONTROLLED: Cockroaches such as German, American, Australian, Smoky-Brown, Brown, Asian, Oriental, and Brown-Banded.

Target Uses

Use Advion Cockroach Gel Bait indoors and outdoors as a crack and crevice treatment to control even the toughest of infestations. Advion Cockroach Gel Bait is excellent for German roaches as they are the most common indoor infesting roach. Advion Cockroach Gel Bait may be used in conjunction with Insect Growth Regulators, such as Gentrol Point Source Stations, for even more complete control of all life stages of cockroaches.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Indoxacarb, 0.6%

Advion Cockroach Gel Bait Application Instructions

  • For heavy infestations of cockroaches, apply 3 to 5 spots of ADVION Cockroach Gel Bait per 10 linear feet.
  • For light to moderate infestations of cockroaches, apply 1-3 spots of ADVION cockroach gel bait per 10 linear feet.
  • Each spot of ADVION gel bait should equal about 0.5 grams (approx. 1/4” diameter).
  • For all levels of cockroach infestations, when a bead of ADVION Cockroach Gel Bait is used, apply a small thin bead that is less than 1/8” wide and approximately 2 inches long.

Each 30 g tube yields approximately 60 bait placements. Each box of 4 x 30 g tubes yields approximately 240 placements.

Advion Cockroach Gel Bait is for use in the following areas:

Residential, Institutional, Commercial, and Industrial Areas; Use sites include single and multi-family residential buildings, schools, commercial and industrial facilities (including warehouses, apartments, supermarkets, restaurants, motels, hotels, hospitals, food handling/storage establishments), and transportation equipment such as aircraft, trains, ships, boats, buses; residential homes, industrial facilities, offices, warehouses, commercial kitchens, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, hotels, buses, trains, aircraft, retail and commercial establishments, and other areas infested with cockroaches

Where to apply Advion Cockroach Gel Bait INDOORS:

  • 3 to 5 spots of gel bait per 10 linear feet for heavy infestations.
  • 1 to 3 spots of gel bait per 10 linear feet for light to moderate infestations.

ADVION Cockroach Gel should be applied to areas frequented by cockroaches such as between different elements of construction, between equipment and floors, openings leading into voids and hollow spaces in floors, walls, ceilings, equipment legs and bases, around plumbing pipes, doors and windows, and behind and under appliances, cabinets, sinks, closets, and any other equipment that cockroaches are typically known to hide.

See our Indoor Roach Control Guide for more examples of indoor placement.

Where to apply Advion Coackroach Gel Bait OUTDOORS:

  • A thorough inspection around a structure may reveal areas where cockroaches are gaining access. Attempts should be made to remove the access.
  • ADVION Cockroach Gel Bait may also be applied as a spot or thin bead (see above) to pest entry sites such as along windows, doors, between construction elements, sewer areas, adjacent trees which harbor cockroaches, along walls, garbage holding areas, or suitable placement site acting as a cockroach harborage. Bait placements should be made to reduce the potential of subsequent human contact.
  • Bait placements should be inspected periodically and fresh bait applied as needed.
  • Bait should be placed in cracks and crevices to reduce exposure to rain, dust, and sunlight.

Extra Tips for Using Advion Cockroach Gel Bait

  • Avoid applying ADVION Cockroach Gel to surfaces recently treated with residual sprays.
  • Surfaces treated with ADVION Cockroach Gel should not be treated with residual sprays. Keep sprays low and baits high.
  • Repeat applications may be made upon inspection during follow-up inspections of the treated areas.
  • Do not apply to surfaces that food contacts.
  • Do not allow open foods to contact gel material.
See also:  What Are The Different Types of Mosquitoes?

* Do not apply bait to surfaces where the temperature may exceed 120-130 degrees F because this may cause the bait to liquefy and the gel to lose effectiveness.

* If gel comes into contact with exposed surfaces, remove the bait and wash the area with soap and water.

* Store out of extreme temperatures and direct sunlight for up to one year.

* Avoid placing bait on porous surfaces, e.g. concrete or cardboard, or where it may be exposed to air currents. These conditions may cause the bait to dry out and be less attractive.

* If response slows down, try rotating with a different brand of cockroach bait.

* Always practice good sanitation by eliminating other food and water sources to make the bait more attractive.

Excellent results

Saw some cockroaches scurrying out of the kitchen and used this bait. Have found dead cockroaches all over the place, the problem must have been worse that I originally thought. 7 days later, problem 100% fixed, amazing stuff — highly recommended.

Purchased in February 2019 at Bunnings Warehouse for $7.99 .

Unbeliveable

So we had german roaches in our kitchen and it was getting bad. On a night they would scutle out and cover the surfaces, eating crumbs and leaving poo everywhere. I tried bug bombs and bug spray and nothing was getting rid of them. The bombs felt like they actually encouraged the roaches to come out of their hiding spots. I instead decided to try this gel. The best results are after thoroughly cleaning the kitchen, inside and out. I bought 2 tubes and put a dab in all the hiding spots I saw the roaches. Day 1 and there were lots of sick looking. roaches. After a week, we would see one or two. I just saw one now, 3 weeks after the bait was put in, and it fell straight over and died as soon as i moved it. Basically, this stuff is amazing if you read up on how to use it and what it is. I will be buying more to top up the baits in a few months time!

Very happy with result

I read the reviews on this site and decided to purchase this product. I took it to my house in Vanuatu where I applied it and it was fantastic. I cut up a plastic take-away containers and put a dot on each piece of the plastic which I then placed in lots of places — about 25 all up. Very happy to see lots of dead cockroaches after the second night. I re-used the plastic pieces a few times and then removed them to the bin once I was satisfied the job had been done. Very happy.

Brilliant product if used creatively

My neighbours cook outside, unfortunately many of the roaches that feed on their scraps end up in my yard and inside my house. I followed the instructions and placed a dot in each corner and in dark spaces. The first week I noticed a lot of roaches on their backs dying, the following week I had a huge reduction and seldom see any of them indoors

It didn’t work so well outdoors due to rain/wind, but then I realised that you could carefully sneak up to the roaches in near darkness, and place a drop on their backs before they realize and scuttl. Read more

e away. The cockroaches eventually meet up with their friends, who seem to actively chase them for the gel on their backs I did this for a couple of evenings, tagging about 30 roaches in total. I found a huge number dead or dying over the next week, and the overall number dropped drastically. I didn’t expect this outcome but am really pleased with the result.

Mixed reviews from me

I’m not really sure about how I feel about this product. I bought this to use it on our storage facility last week. After a couple of days after applying it on the corners, wall cracks, shelves, etc, I started seeing a handful of dead roaches. However, after about a week, I can still see a number of them crawling all over the place. I guess what I’m trying to say is although some of the roaches died, the gel doesn’t seem to be really effective since. But, I’m still planning on using the gel and I’ll be applying generously this time. Hopefully, it will get the job done.

Unbelievable!

We’ve had a severe infestation of German cockroaches for several years. We’d spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on bombs and professional pest control, but none of them worked. My wife kept telling me to try the gel bait for $7.99 and for months and months I refused. I was like how can something so cheap be so effective?? Finally she won and I broke down and bought a few. I put dots in the corners of cabinets and along windows and door frames. I’ll be damned if we’ve been been cockroach free for over a year now! Totally insane. I have t. Read more

wo syringes full and will occasionally reapply a dot here and there. I’d say within a week or two they were all gone. They would eat it and then go back to their nest and then die, and because they’re cannibals that’s how the poison would spread. I would give this product 1,000 stars if I could! I can’t even tell you how’s it’s changed our lives. We never had visitors because of how embarrassed I was of the infestation, but now we are constantly bbqing with friends and family!

WHAT IS A GE RMAN COCKROACH?

Probably the most commonly encountered cockroach in houses and food processing establishments is the German Cockroach. The German Cockroach seeks out conditions that provide warmth, moisture and food. As a result the vast majority of German Cockroach infestations are found in domestic kitchens, commercial kitchens and other food handling areas.

German Cockroaches will often be found in kitchen cupboards and hinges, behind ovens, fridge motors, under sinks, inside pantries and storerooms, in and around hot water heaters, inside and under other appliances including microwaves, toasters and kettles.

Adult German Cockroaches are light amber-brown in colour, about 12-15mm long and winged but they do not fly. Egg cases are usually carried by the female until just before hatching and can contain 30-40 eggs. German Cockroaches will eat almost any organic material found in food handling areas such as food scraps, crumbs, built up grease, etc. When there is sufficient water available an adult German Cockroach can survive up to a month without food.

WHERE DO GERMAN COCKROACHES COME FROM?

Although German Cockroaches are winged they do not seem to fly. Its widespread dispersal is largely a result of human activities. Egg cases, nymphs and adult German Cockroaches are transported from place to place in food packaging, cardboard boxes, shopping bags, produce, etc. Due to their small size, German Cockroaches are able to establish themselves in the smallest cracks and crevices where they breed prolifically allowing large populations to build up extremely quickly particularly during the warmer summer months.

HOW TO GET RID OF GERMAN COCKROACHES

  1. Thoroughly inspect the premises for areas of German Cockroach infestation using a good torch. Focus on cracks and crevices around kitchen bench tops & cupboards, cupboard hinges, fridge motors, behind & under ovens, appliances, pantries and storerooms, etc. Note: If the infestation is extensive, German Cockroaches may also be infesting other areas of the premises such as laundry and bathroom areas.
  2. Once you have identified German Cockroach harbourages you can apply the Maxforce Gold Cockroach Gel. Place small ‘pea sized’ spots in or near the areas of infestation. German Cockroaches will ingest the gel and die a short time later.
  3. Maxforce Gold Cockroach Gel is designed to have a ‘domino effect’ on German Cockroach infestations. This means once a German Cockroach has ingested the gel their contaminated faeces and bodies will contaminate other German Cockroaches in the population without them having to directly eat the gel.
  4. The Maxforce Gold Cockroach Gel may need to be replenished if the previous application has been consumed and German Cockroaches remain present. Increasing the number of spots in heavily infested areas may also be required.
  5. Install the Lo Line Cockroach Traps. Good areas to install the Lo Line Cockroach Traps include behind or under fridges, beside ovens, in the back of cupboards, other discreet areas where German Cockroaches have been sighted.
  6. These Lo Line Cockroach Traps are very helpful in both reducing German Cockroach numbers as well as monitoring future activity. They should be checked regularly and the number of caught German Cockroaches should be noted.
