3 Types of Bad Neighbors (And How to Deal With Each One)

Three Types of Nasty Neighbors & What to Do About Each One

If you’re twenty-something years old now (or have kids of this age), you’re likely to remember a video game ‘Neighbors from Hell’ that’s been popular in 2000s. Built around a confrontation between two neighbors performing tricks upon each other, it was keeping folks in front of computers for hours. Banana peels on the floor, sawing chairs, and messing with home equipment was just a part of all that crazy nastiness of the game.

I’ve played this game myself, and I have to admit it was a lot of fun. Only later in my life I realized it was the kind of fun that’s only cool in a game, and is a nightmare when neighbors from hell become a part of your daily life. That’s why today our focus is on nasty neighbors and tricks you can use to convert them into tolerable or even good ones.

Bad Neighbors: Who Are They?

If you’ve been living on a street where homes sit shoulder to shoulder, you know that bad neighbors come in all shapes and forms. Some of them make it impossible to sleep at night; some can’t keep their pets under control, while others might practice drunk-walking around the neighborhood and scare your kids.

So a bad neighbor is anyone who lives next door (or next floor) and gets on your nerves regularly by doing something that’s not particularly illegal but exceptionally annoying. If it becomes uncomfortable for you to stay at home, chances are good it’s a bad neighbor to blame.

What to Do About Bad Neighbors?

Your course of actions should always depend on the level of annoyance your neighbor causes. In some cases, the best approach would be to accept the situation and learn how to stay indifferent. In others, it might be necessary to master the art of legal torment, while in especially rare situations, it would make sense to find the way to make your neighbor move (since bad neighbors are often bad tenants, there’s always a chance of.

Simply put, the key is to keep things reasonable. Entering into a war with a bad neighbor might take you down the wrong path and cost you a lot of healthy nerves. That’s why you should always start with a friendly approach and only refer to drastic measures when nothing else seems to be working.

What Types of Bad Neighbors Are There?

For the sake of simplicity, let’s group all nasty neighbors in three categories from least to most annoying ones and consider suggested courses of action for each.

Type 1: Slightly Annoying Neighbors

Common Examples: Parents of not well-behaved kids who’re screaming all day long, drivers who got it wrong about parking rules, irresponsible pet owners having hard times taking care of their four-legged friends, overly friendly ladies who want to tell your their biography each time you meet, chronic borrowers.

Introduce Yourself & Get to Know Them Better

That’s what you need to do first thing if your neighbors start to annoy you on a regular basis. By simply introducing yourself and letting your neighbors know what bothers you might make wonders. Firstly, because people tend to be more ashamed and respectful in regards to those they know personally. Secondly, there is a tiny little chance that your neighbors have no idea they annoy you, and telling them so will solve the problem once and for all.

Don’t Accuse, Tell Them How it Makes You Feel

One of the most common mistakes is to accuse neighbors right from the start. A way smarter approach would be telling them you’re bothered and annoyed, but keeping the conversation friendly and polite. Try to find the root cause of your neighbor’s bad behavior and offer to help if they’ve happened to deal with a problem that makes them behave in a particular way.

Mirror the Behavior of Your Neighbor

A widely-used psychological trick, mirroring your neighbor’s behavior might help them realize their fault and never do things that annoy you again. At the same time, this approach will help you get even with bad neighbors (but only if you’re seeking revenge more than a solution of your neighbor-related problem).

Consider Using Mediators

So wags the world that some people get along with each other with ease, while others find it hard to understand each other’s concerns and feelings. If the second option describes you and your neighbor’s relationships, it makes a lot of sense to find a mediator who’s willing to solve the problem for the benefit of both parties. If you’re renting, get in touch with your landlord and ask if he or she is ready to mediate. As you’re the one sending checks to your landlord every month (or paying rent online), your comfort should be their concern as well.

Give a Warning (Concrete One)

Informing annoying neighbors on your willingness to contact their landlord or local precinct can sometimes make wonders. As long as you sound confident and concrete, a simple warning might be enough to make your neighbors stop doing things that annoy you.

Type 2: Annoying Neighbors

Common Examples: Party animals dancing and drinking 24/7, gossipers who spread rumors about you or your family, rock band singing the same chords in a garage self-made studio.

Seek Support From Other Neighbors

It’s always easier to achieve desired goals through joint efforts. If it’s likely that you’re not the only one unhappy about your neighbor’s behavior, you should check if someone else is ready to side you. This point is especially important if you decide to contact local precinct or file a complaint in court. In this case, quantity matters. The more people share your opinion, the more chances to win you have.

Call Your Neighbor’s Landlord

Most of the people don’t like to complain or report on others, but sometimes it’s the only way out. If your neighbors are long-term tenants, chances are good they don’t want to be evicted. If this holds true, it’s likely that your problem will be solved before you even know it.

Contact HOA (Homeowners Association)

This is probably one of the simplest ways to buy your neighbor out or put a stop to his or her annoying behavior. In some cases, a manager of the association could talk to a noise-making neighbor and fine them if a simple warning appears to be not enough. Chances are good this step would solve the problem at least to a certain extent.

Refer to the Governing Laws

If you’re dealing with noise, which is the most common reason for disputes between neighbors, refer to the letter of the law. There are ordinances to prohibit unnecessary, unreasonable, and excessive levels of noise meant to protect you from being a victim of noise-makers. If you’re able to prove that the problem is real and your neighbor is a source of it, you can refer to small claims court (for financial compensation) or regular civil court (to cease and desist the noise-maker).

Type 3: Exceptionally Annoying Neighbors

Common Examples: Psychos, sneaky stealers, garbage collectors, criminals making their bad business right in front of your home.

Collect Evidence & Try to Force Your Neighbor to Move

If your neighbor’s behavior is exceptionally irritating but isn’t life-threatening, you may want to collect evidence and contact authorities (local precinct, cops, lawyers). Another option you have is to write a petition together with other neighbors. Have your petition signed by as many residents as possible and state a very specific grievance and desired outcome. Once done, present it to the landlord or HOA. In case your complaint is legitimate, the problem will be fixed relatively soon.

Consider Moving to Another ‘Hood

In some cases, the best decision is to move to another neighborhood. This is especially true if you’ve tried to solve the problem in different ways but nothing helped. Not even to mention the situations when living by a nasty neighbor is not only annoying but also dangerous. If you’re sure the person next door is involved in illegal business or is a psycho whose behavior might pose a threat to your health, report the problem to police and move out from your current place of residence as fast as possible.

On a Final Note

In some cases, neighbors might be the real nightmare next door. If it happens, the most common (and most natural) reaction in people is to arrange a bad neighbors revenge, find out how to get even with bad neighbors or even how to get them to move. But no matter what happens, remember that conflicts are best resolved through negotiations, not wars. Talk to your neighbors, tell them what bothers you, and propose a solution. Only refer to authorities in case a friendly approach doesn’t work or you have grounds to assume that your neighbors might have the history with the law.

Larry Emder, when moving into an existing neighborhood, realize it’s you that has to “fit in”, not the other way around. You must be respectful & polite, especially when these neighbors have lived here decades. It’s not like the joy of our lives.

View ‘Michael Huke’ on YouTube, assault a 71 year old who had parked on the road outside his house. The incident was reported to the police who declined to investigate (despite numerous requests).
After 12 weeks someone uploaded the video onto YouTube, weeks later the bystander who had witnessed and videoed the incident was arrested at his place of work, charged with harassment as the video discredited Michael Huke before his staff at Lloyds Bank. 2 or 3 hours later the 71 year old was arrested at home with the same charge. Both were released later in the day without charge.
23 other incidents of harassment by Michael Huke have been reported to the police over a 2 year period, including dangerous driving, anti-social behaviour, assault etc. Michael Huke has been served with 4 ‘cease and desist’ letters (to my knowledge) one for trespass, he signed an ABC (acceptable behaviour contract) for the Local Authority Anti-social team, he was prosecuted for allowing his dog to defecate on the highway outside a neighbour’s property.

Deborah Rogers- I believe in prayer as well. My right side neighbor was a bad one with drug addict son. His son and friends parked his car with loud music in front of my house and they started drinking bears all night long and left the empty cans on my front yard. I talked to his mom about it, and they started picking the empty cans next morning. I felt sorry for her. Well, I pray so strongly to our Almighty Father and in less than one month the entire family was moving out. —Now, the neighbor on the left side are giving me problems. I told him that his son broke my fence throwing a ball and he didn’t fix. Also, he switched my trash can with his broken wheel one. I had to call the city for them to replace mine with a new one. The guy has a mechanic/body shop in his garage and use the streets to park the cars he has to fix. I told him that he cannot block my Mail box. I even received a note from the Post Office to remove the car, otherwise, they couldn’t deliver my mail. This is against the Law because this is a residential neighborhood. I don’t want to be stressed about it and I am praying for them to move to a place where he would have a plenty of space to do his business. I thank God that I read your notes, it gave me strength to pray some more and reminded me that God listens. God bless!! Thanks for the prayers!!

how about all you people take a long hard look at yourself’s in the mirror maybe you are actually looking at the problem. Think back when the neighbors first moved in or you moved in (doesn’t really matter who was there first). I bet most of you were judgmental on how they looked, spoke or carried themselves or they said good day and you gave them the cold shoulder because you have judged them from the very first moment you’ve seen them. I see a lot of comments on here, and most of you sound like you carry your noses way to high. Example: Creepy neighbors who live off fraudulent insurance and workman’s comp settlements. 1: If you could back that up remotely with any evidence there would be an investigation and they would be kicked out and repay everything they got payed and if they could not do that they would be in jail.
2: If you don’t have any evidence you are assuming (assumptions make an ass out of you and leave you open for libel, slander and defamation law suits).
3: City Noise Ordinance, there is places you can go and complain if it proves to be right what you are complaining about they will get warnings and eventually go to court if it hasn’t stopped.
4: Resident Quiet Hours Policy is straight up garbage unless you are at university (which all university’s enforce this), the only time this is warranted is if the landlord has this as a policy in the actual rental agreement (so i would read my rental agreement again) otherwise it is not a valid Policy and you should move on before it makes you look like a you know what again.
5: As for Theodore Roberts (Oh boy please think before you speak) if you have used your real name and this person ever stumbles across this site, they can sue the pants of you for Defamation, Racism, Sexism and bigotry and that is just a start and there is nothing you can do about it. So please a little thinking with your comments here.
6: MiTmite9 your comment collect evidence through form of recordings, videos, photos.
REALLY. In case you did not know (let me educate you a little) It is illegal in 90% of the world (unless you live in country’s with either military rule, communism or no law enforcement) to record video, photos or voice without the permission of the recorded person unless you are working for law enforcement and even then it is only possible with a cord order to do so otherwise it is inadmissible in any situation and you leave yourself open (yes you guessed it LAW SUITS again by the person you are recording)
Closing words: Educate yourselves do research before giving other people the wrong advise or make assumptions or comments that can ruin your own lives.

“Train Your Mind To Be Stronger Than Your Feelings”

I have neighbors, its more like a bunch of people from the community, that drive by my house, every few minutes blasting their radios. It does not start at a certain time, its all day long and all night long. They don’t have their radio loud when they are driving, they crank it up when they get near our house, and turn it back down when they closer to the next house. Mostly its base that makes that Boom Boom sound. They have been doing it for about 2 and half years. I have called the police many times, specially when it wakes me every night. Recently they have been getting worse, and I have not slept in days. I have sent letters to different places, including the Government, and no one will help. Our house has been for sale for a few years on and off, as we change realtors. When the police do help they drive up in their police cars and they all disappear. When the police leave, they all come back. The police say their is no law against how loud they want to play their radio. They play cat and mouse with the police while they harass me and my mom. I am 56 and mom is 79. We don’t get much sleep these days. I don’t have an income and she is retired and we barely make the bills. We need help. (I believe they also have a way of listening to everything we say.)(Amazon sells devices that listen thru walls for $50-$150, at a range of 300 feet.)

I have the worst hateful neighbors from WHEN THEY moved next door almost 9 yrs ago they tried desperately to claim 10 ft of my property. I told them the street lite was where the property ended. Then they mounded up six feetof addedsoil to their yard and. Built a in ground pool with no 10 ft setback THEY poisoned all the pine and mature trees on my lot a D made all the leaves come down too early in the season also they put propane torches all around thepool sometimes. Now every day I SEE HOLES IN THE GROUND and mushy dirt above it THEY are true criminals and tried to short-circuit my house I BELIEVE THEY WANTED TO TORCH my house so it would burn their house. They surged my house so bad that2 phones got actually burned out my AC OUT DOOR UNIT STOPPED. aLSO HAD TO REPLACE MY STOVE MICROWAVE FRIDGE WASHING MACHINE. aND OVERHEAD LIGHTING IN THE HOUSE. mY HOME IS ONLY 12 YRSOLD. They shot a bullet threw my car window July 2015. They managed to topple 2 eighty ft pine trees against myhouse in 2016 I HAD TOPAY OUT OF POCKET for new whole house vinyl because the other sides. Of my white vinyl could no ,longer be power washed for all the yrs of gas torches and fire pit burning they did. They have been in forclosure for the last 3yrs. Three yrs ago they started playing annoying tapes from their screened. In porch not music gunshots airraid noises. Banging metal sounds. If you call police and they see the car they stop. I called the assoc here manytimes. They do nothing also this summer I BELIEVE they stole water from you hose to their I use about 3300gal a mo and some readings were 13000 gal. Also they cut up my hoses on both sides of the house because they cidntwantme using waterwhi.E they were trying to torch my house THEY AND 2 OF their friends in the nice middle-class neighborhood with 300000 value of houses have helped them by shooting guns randomly. Putting mounds of red fire ants on my yard digging up my lawn to surge my underground wiring NOW I THINK THEY AREmoving. They packed up a trailer and left but the one in thehouse is making noise THEY are fuming mad that their evil manipulation didn’t work and show their hatred thru noise and extreme vandalism. Each tribe had to plant a whole new Lawn. I bought several tall and short solar lights and put them out I havexecurity cameras they know how to get around those too I NAE SPENT 20000 out of pocket for whatthis couple has done to me I HOPE THEY MOVE FAR away they have vandalized my property for over 8 yrs and woke me upseveral times for over 3 yrs every nite they make noise even in the daytimebecause their plan didntwork. The police know about the the assoc the electric company the water co BUT U HAVE TO PROVE IT. Only GOD CAN PUNISH EVIL PEOPLE LIKE THIS THESE PEOPLE ARE 60 YRS OLD THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO MAKE NOISE OR VANDALIZE MY PROPERTY THEY EVEN PUT SOME UGLY BLACK DOTS ALL OVER MY CONCFETE DRIVEWAY LATELY MY BOYFRIEND HAS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND DIABETES AND CANNOT TOLERATE AY STRESS SO IVE HAD TO FIGHT THESE PEOPLE ALONE ON AN UNLEVEL. pLAYI G GROUND ANY SUGGESTIONS THANK YOU FOR READING THIS TERRI

My neighbor has always been unpleasant, frequently yelling at me, trying bully me, etc. When I was at work they were doing things in the blind spots of my security cameras that are mounted from the eaves.
I kept not having time to run cables through the attic for new cameras in the blind spots & last fall I came home to my back yard totally trashed by debris thrown over the fence, broken flower pots(knocked over by the debris I think) and the smell of weed killer on my flowers (most did not come back this year). So, last winter I took some old cell phones and put an app called “Alfred” on them & set or hung them in the windows. It records on motion and stores footage for 5 days for free. I was able to successfully catch my neighbor doing enough in the spring to download & burn it to CD for the cops. While I never saw cops cars in my camera footage, I strongly believe something happened. The neighbor has been livid – I’ve been flipped off several times but I have not been yelled at or harassed in months!

I have white power cords(that match the blinds) going to the phones & I put the phones in cases that kinda match the background of where they are sitting in the window. The cases also help keep the phone in the correct spot or angle.

Hello – I’d like to start out by saying I’m so sorry you are going thru this… I have a very troubling neighbor also – Prayer solves Everything – – As our loving Father above does hear our prayer… So lets pray this prayer. Father in Heaven – I’m releasing this prayer to you in behalf of Terri, myself, and anyone in need of Thy sending demonic neighbors to flee – – Father we know only you can handle the situation – No matter how big or small, Precious Father please intervene, remove these persons from our territory, as we open our minds hearts and souls to Thee, for Father – Let not these neighbors or anyone else take up our precious time in which we need to serve Thee and get the rest that we need, we believe in thee 100% Dear Lord – – and know that this Miracle, is done in Thy name Oh Lord – We half belief that Thou have healed the situation, and sent these neighbors on their way, that they can never hurt us again, Halleluhah, Amen – It is done . Praise God . Forever give him his praise, for He is so worthy. God Bless you. The bible says God will make your enemies your footstool… Just only believe – – devote yourself to him daily… He is so worthy.

I have neighbors that have moved across the road, we all have acreage. He is a fowl mouth loose cannon who is obscessed with a piece of road that is easment on my corner. He and his wife are total a-holes. In other words their s–t don’t stink. They have created a lot of disruption in our small community of only 10 houses. I want to do something legally to piss them off and annoy them. They are a yound snotty couple. I need lots of suggestions. We planted more privacy trees to block them out and I know he was really mad. Any suggestions. Everyone else who lives here can’t stand them. They think the rules (we have an HOA) are for everyone else but them. Our roads are granite rock and after they built there house they were required to fix the road and they refuse to do so. I am a director along with 2 others and we are in the process of sending them an attorney letter about repairing the road. Any good suggestions to put them in there place?

I’d say that there’s not really anything you could do legally for annoying neighbors but what they are doing could potentially lead to harassment then, you could do something legally about it. The best option would to be just drop it and try not to let it get to you and once they se that they’re not phasing you anymore they will probably stop eventually. But if your not the one to do the silent treatment them you could start being as annoying as them and see how they like it…

A nice, natural way is to plant tall evergreen trees that can be grown as a shrub or be hedge to control height and width. I have the most nosy neighbors, so the first plants that I put into the ground was in a planting area closest to their nosy faces was a Bay Laural (Laurus nobilis), Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana), and for shrubs (Viburnum, Photinia) and lots of Bamboo. In the SF Bay Area, Bamboo works great, because it grows very fast after couple years, and if you want to annoy them back, plant Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) because it is very invasive and will grow in their yard as well, and if they are not gardeners the Black Bamboo will take their yard over or plant Golden Bamboo (Bambusa ‘Alphonse Karr’), or if you want to cover the view of an ugly large house or apartment building, try the Giant Timber Bamboo (Bambusa oldhammii), and the same tree/shrubs listed above….

….For the not so nice, and unnatural way is to find out what makes your neighbors tick? My neighbor is narcissistic, doesn’t care much about his own wife, kids or trespassing into our yard, but he really cares “a lot” about his money.

So, find out where he works, write a letter about his psychopath behavioral traits to the owner of his company, and warn them (you are just pushing karma about these jerk neighbors) and try to get the kook fired. If they own the business, contact their clients and note all the liabilities about your neighbor, but remain anonymous to avoid further conflict and retaliation from the neighbor. Once he loses his job and get a new job, “rinse and repeat”, write another letter to his new employer. Once he starts to run out of money, his annoyances, disrespecting his neighbors will soon turn where he will be more concerned about paying his mortgage, instead of bugging you.

If you neighbor has kids, find anything to report him to the local authorities, or if he is a drunk, abusive or homeschooling their kids – call child protective services; but it has to be legitimate, so you are not wasting our police services on time.

Eventually you will become their annoying neighbor, but don’t let down your guard, keep documenting, get camera’s and if all fails walk by one of their lawn sprinklers, trip over and fall to the ground and sue the crap out of them

You could do what people have complained about on here. The decrease such actions would have to your quality of life I don’t know if it’d be worth it.
I’ve always just tried to stick to my morals & ethics while the rude person flounders.
Sometimes such people are just looking to upset other’s – it makes them feel empowered, entertained or something. If you try to do anything forthright they may view it as a pissing contest of sorts and escalations of such matters can get ridiculous.

I moved that’s the best solution. Sold my house to a cop.
