Grasshopper brings plant-based comfort food to the Beaches

Photo: Grasshopper

Toronto’s east end has a new restaurant dedicated to plant-based eating.

The third location of Grasshopper is now open at 2252 Queen St. East, in the Beaches. A perennial favourite of many of Toronto’s best-of roundups, Grasshopper is known for vegan and vegetarian comfort dishes.

The focus of the east end location — called Grasshopper Salon — is on delicious, hearty foods that just happen to be plant-based (think kimchi mac-n-cheese, rich umami curry, substantial salads). The menu is inspired by East Asian cuisines and the vibe is hip, though not too cool. Overall, it’s a welcomed breath of fresh air for the Beaches.

Drawn to the peaceful area, the Beaches was the perfect location to expand the neighbourhood brand, as they explain.

The new outpost is the largest of all three restaurants — the other two near the University of Toronto and in the Junction — and has some unique offerings, namely a larger menu (order the agedashi tofu) and an expanded baked goods selection. Do not skip dessert. Their beautiful Japanese baked goods are worth visiting for alone. They plan to expand this offering, though on any given day they’re already serving up an incredible matcha cheesecake (or tiramisu, or banana cake. order everything).

Of course, all offerings are vegan and gluten-free. Get a kinako latte to go — roasted soybeans that make for a drink that is nutty, toasty and totally delicious.

Lunch and dinner are available during the week while weekends offer brunch and dinner. Watch for Grasshopper Salon on UberEats soon, too.

I am a vegan and my friend is GF so it was great to dine worry free and have such a delicious meal, including great beer, wine and the Tiramisu is to die for!

Had a great time with friends and family after attending a ceremony. Stumbling upon the place was fantastic and I definitely plan on coming back not just with them but with other loved ones as well

Beautifully decorated restaurant with incredible food and fantastic service.

Had a reservation for 6:30 pm and nobody contacted us to let us know the restaurant would be closing at 8:00 pm. Unprofessional.

We arrived at 6:30 only to be told that a number of menu items were unavailable. My Chick-un wrap was very tasty but my wife’s quinoa bowl was very bland. Found the prices for wine and beer very high, too high for a restaurant that serves casual food. Not likely to return.

The meal was fine and our server was very friendly. My issue was that after clearly stated that one of the people in our party has a nut allergy, she was still served a dessert that contained ground cashews. She had a severe anaphylactic reaction and had to leave the restaurant. Needless to say, this was not the end to the evening we had envisioned.

It was our third visit, and we love this place! The only improvements I would suggest would be adding a kids menu (smaller portions for smaller people would be nice), and please please please a decaf espresso/Americano option!

I was mistakenly given a regular hamburger bun instead of gluten free as I had requested. I had turned down fries to go along with the burger when I questioned how they were made. I even used the word contaminated to ask why they were not gluten free. So I thought it was clear I wanted a gluten free meal. When the burger arrived the bun looked and felt like a regular bun not GF. I double checked with our server and I was assured it was gluten free. It wasn’t until I had eaten some of it that the server came back and said he was mistaken. The two buns looked very different so there was no reason for it to have happened. The server apologized more than once but still not okay. Their website says that people of all dietary lifestyles are welcome. I guess they just don’t mean that they’ll take it seriously.

As a vegan I thought the meal was tasty and welcome a vegan restaurant in the beaches! They said they were about to make more changes in the menu, I’m not big on meat substitutes- there are so many tasty vegan dishes with pulses, etc. I liked the lentil burger and tasty fries- hoping they keep expanding menu and asking feedback!

So good! They seem to still be figuring out a few things – the menu didn’t quite match what is online and they didn’t yet have a wine list ready. But our server was really helpful and filled in any information gaps. The food was so delicious – I can’t stop thinking about it. It was my birthday and we ordered the blueberry cheesecake for dessert- and the server brought it out with a candle. So nice. I will be going back for sure!

This is definitely comfy food for vegans. The teriyaki burger had a crispy “chicken patty”, topped with teriyaki glaze, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, making the bun a bit soggy. Still, the burger tasted really good! It’s one of my favourite vegan burgers, beating many other restaurants downtown. We had corn curry for today’s soup. It was creamy and flavourful. I also had a turmeric latte, which was not yet in their menu, according to our server. It had some herbs, and there was an option for almond or soy milk. Again, another successful concoction. I’ve been trying to love anything turmeric, but had failed until I drank Greenhopper’s latte. They also now serve alcohol. One can always come back for a different experience of the resto. There were several seating options, making it great for coffee, drinks, casual or fine dining. Also, our staff was on top of everything. We will come back again. 🙂

Delicious and my friends whom had not had a vegan dinner before, were impressed..

My husband and I have eaten at the two other Toronto branches of Grasshopper Restaurant and enjoyed them, but I think this one is our new favorite. The space is lovely – it will suit an upscale meal / drinks or something more casual. Our servers were very friendly. The food was excellent. The stuffed mushrooms tasted wonderful and the dish looked lovely. My teriyaki burger was very flavorful but it’s definitely a three-napkin burger. My husband enjoyed the Dan Dan Noodles, too. There was a very limited beverage selection and no alcohol (perhaps because they opened only recently). My mocktail was quite flavorful. It’s great to enjoy a meal where you don’t have to ask all the time “is this vegan?”. It’s also great to have a stylish and comfortable neighborhood restaurant that serves amazing vegan food, so we can invite all our omni friends and show them that vegans don’t just eat salad.

Amazing experience. The food is delicious. Well worth the visit!

Beautiful restaurant with an amazing server! Great food; even for a non-vegetarian

Made a reservation for Grasshopper (Beaches) online through OpenTable for my partner’s birthday. Arrived to the restaurant to find it closed with a note on the door. I didn’t receive any follow-up from the restaurant in the days after to acknowledge the closure or missed reservation. Very disappointed.

Delicious original flavours!

The food was amazing, flavourful and very nicely presented. But it took 45 minutes to arrive–and there was no offer of compensation–e.g., free dessert or here’s an app while you’re waiting. And the people who arrived 1/2 an hour after us had their food 20 minutes before we did. Also the restaurant was very cold with a chill February breeze every time the door opened–poorly designed entrance.

Highly recommend this spot! The food was fantastic – especially loved the Curry Fries, the Rice poppers and the Popcorn apps. I had the “Pork” burger – delicious, if a bit messy (which added to the fun of eating it). My partner also had the Un-Chicken Burger. Also delicious. Service was very good and they were very accommodating, as our party grew beyond the size of our reservation. Wish I had enough room to order dessert, because they looked great.

Excellent food. Can’t believe vegan food can be so yummy. even my kids loved the chick un burger! Great addition to the neighbourhood. We will wholeheartedly support it!

Our server was lovely! Genuine and knowledgeable and checked in just enough.

We started with a couple of apps — the soup of the day and the stuffed cremini mushrooms. The soup was sweet and tasty, and came with some of the most delicious cornbread toast ever. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite “hot”. The stuffed mushrooms had a lot of potential, but they were barely warm, which was ironic, given that they are described as “hot stuff” on the menu.

Our mains were a lot more appealing. The Harvest Quinoa with added tofu was full of all kinds of smoky, savoury flavours, with just enough of the garlic cream sauce to keep the dish from being dry. The Dandan Noodles were flavourful without too much spice. Both dishes were served hot.

We didn’t indulge in a any desserts, but we enjoyed a turmeric latte that was frothy and yummy, and a basic club soda was appreciated for being served with a metal straw (yay environment!). Although one of the hostesses basically tried to clean off our table and get us our bill after finishing only our appetizers, all other service was excellent. Hot appetizers would’ve made the evening a real winner, though! We’d probably return (it’s conveniently located for us) and we’d probably recommend to other plant-based diners.
