Steam cleaning machines can be a great way to keep many of the surfaces in your home spotless. Read on to find out more about steam cleaning!
Updated 8 April 2020
Did you know that you can use steam cleaners to clean almost every surface in your house? In fact, there are lots of advantages to steam cleaning that might make you wonder why you haven’t included it in your house cleaning routine before. Here’s a handy summary of how you can use steam to clean your home:
Safety is key when using a steam cleaner, which can reach high temperatures. To ensure you do not get burned or scalded, wear protective clothing, and if your vision becomes impaired by excess steam clouds pause your work until the cloud has evaporated.
Reasons to Use Steam Cleaners
There are several reasons why steam cleaning might be good for you to use in your home:
- It is eco-friendly – no chemicals are involved
- Uses heat to disinfect or sanitise nearly all household surfaces
- Steam evaporates quickly, so surfaces dry faster than when cleaned with water
- Is excellent for those difficult-to-clean cracks and crevices
- Steam can dissolve hard-to-remove substances like ground-in wax, glue, and chewing gum
Things to Keep in Mind When Steam Cleaning
Steam cleaning is not always a perfect solution to your cleaning needs. Here are some things you need to remember when steam cleaning:
- Steam cleaned surfaces will still need to be wiped with a cloth – the steam loosens the dirt, but doesn’t remove it
- Wear protective clothing and goggles when using a steam cleaner
- If steam comes in contact with skin, it can cause painful burns
- Some tasks may still be done quicker by hand – think before you use the steam cleaner
- Remember to follow the directions when using a steam cleaner.
Types of Steam Cleaning Machines
There are two types of steam cleaners on the market that you can use for steam cleaning:
- A cool steam cleaning machine (handheld or upright) makes steam without boiling the water. The steam contains more water
- A dry steam cleaning machine (handheld or upright) makes steam from boiling water. The steam contains less water, but is very hot.
Dry steam cleaners are the most effective and efficient of the two, but not all machines are equal: handheld models are not as powerful as upright machines, and may need to be refilled with water more frequently. However, they are more affordable and often cordless.
What Can You Steam Clean?
Most household surfaces can benefit from steam cleaning, but you should always pay attention to the material you’re cleaning and think about how it will react to direct water and heat. Always remember to test a small area of the surface first to see how it will react to the process.
Upholstery, Mattresses, Curtains and Carpets
- Steam kills dust mites and removes stains from these surfaces
- Use a dry steam cleaning machine and an upholstery attachment for these surfaces
- For carpets, you should use a steam cleaner only for spot cleaning – use a carpet cleaning machine for large surfaces
- Test an inconspicuous area first to make sure the material you are cleaning is colour-fast
- Keep the machine moving so you don’t soak the fabric.
Floors, Tiles, and Ceramic and Metal Fixtures
- Steam kills germs, mould, and fungus
- Steam is good for cleaning grout (but not epoxy or caulking)
- Steam should not be used on porous floor surfaces such as concrete, paving stones, limestone, marble, or unsealed hardwood
- Use a dry steam cleaning machine and a floor attachment for these areas
- Keep the machine moving and avoid pressure in one area for too long.
Glass and Mirrors
- Using steam to clean glass and mirrors helps you avoid streaks
- Use a dry steam cleaning machine and a window attachment
- Lay a towel below the surface you’re cleaning to catch any drips
- Drag from the top to the bottom in stripes.
- Handheld dry steam cleaners can sanitise rubbish bins, cutting boards, and work surfaces
- You can also use a handheld dry steam cleaner to clean the fridge and defrost the freezer.
You can steam clean other items in your home, as well, including the following. Be sure to follow the directions on the steam cleaner for advice on how to clean these items.
- Filters and grills (air-conditioning, cooker hood, barbecue)
- Lawn mower
- Car interiors
- Golf clubs
- Pet beds, cages, and litter boxes
- Children’s toys and baby changing areas
Items to Avoid when Steam Cleaning
Some items should not be cleaned with steam, including the following:
- Paper and cardboard products
- Delicate fabrics like silk
- Walls and anything covered in water-based paint.

«This small-but-mighty device will allow you to clean just about anything.»
«You can detach the mop head and use the body of the unit as a handheld cleaner.»
«The vacuum and steam function are independent of each other.»
«Perfect for cleaning and revitalizing your tile, marble, laminate or wood flooring.»
«Let’s you zoom between hard surface floors and carpeting.»
«Replaces the need for full-size steam cleaners.»
Best Overall: McCulloch Heavy Duty Steam Cleaner
The McCulloch Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner takes the top spot for a best overall steam cleaner, thanks to its versatility and deep cleaning ability.
This multi-purpose steam cleaner from McCulloch could truly be described as a steam cleaner for everything and anything. Freshen your grout lines, rid your bathroom fixtures of water stains, restore a sparkle to your oven, refresh your auto upholstery. Users report that receiving this steam cleaner induced a ‘cleaning frenzy’ where they steamed and sanitized everything in sight.
One thing to consider is the longer warm-up time — it takes 8 minutes for the McCulloch Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner to produce steam. In many people’s opinions, though, this is negated by the fact that the machine will produce steam for 45 minutes. That provides a tremendous amount of cleaning power. Many smaller machines have more limited run times before needing to be refilled with water and reheated. If you want a steam cleaner that will tackle anything and delivers overall great performance, choose the McCulloch Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner.
«When used in a small and relatively clean place like a bathroom, this product works well. It’s easy to maneuver in small, awkward spaces — like grimy shower corners — and not having to hold the base saves you energy while cleaning. When used in larger spaces that have messier floors, like the kitchen, this product is less effective.»—Kaitlyn Wylde, Product Tester
Best Budget: Bissell Hard Surface Handheld Steam Cleaner
If you want to put the power of steam cleaning in the palm of your hand for a small price, the Bissell Hard Surface Cleaner is the answer.
This small-but-mighty device will allow you to clean just about anything, thanks to the multiple attachments and ready supply of steam. It’s best used for cleaning up around the kitchen, including cabinet doors, appliance handles and knobs, or faucets. It’s also great for sanitizing sealed surfaces, including granite countertops commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms. Users like this unit is compact, and easy to use for small, quick jobs or routine maintenance. While a few people complained about a lack of power from the steam produced, many users have found the price and the value of this budget steam cleaner to be excellent.
Due to its small size, though, don’t expect to get extended runtime out of this machine. You may need to refill it frequently and let it reheat to finish bigger jobs. Still, this Bissell Hard Surface Cleaner and its attachments make a great versatile choice for handheld steam cleaning.
«Because the water tank is so small—just 6.6 ounces—we found ourselves being economical with the power button. While it’s not hard to refill the canister, it is a hassle, so we relied on the included accessories even more.»—Kaitlyn Wylde, Product Tester
Best Multipurpose: Shark 2-in-1 Steam Pocket Mop
For a steam cleaner that is equally useful for floors or other surfaces, the Shark 2-in-1 Steam Pocket Mop is a great choice.
Shark combined the easy use and functionality of its popular Steam Pocket Mop with a convenient lift-away design to give you a handheld steam cleaner on demand. As a single unit, the 2-in-1 Steam Pocket Mop will clean your floors using a 2-sided microfiber pad and the power of steam. But you can also detach the mop head and use the body of the unit as a handheld steam cleaner.
While it doesn’t come with as many attachments and isn’t quite as nimble as a true handheld steam cleaner, the versatility available in the Shark 2-in-1 Steam Pocket Mop makes it a great choice for a multipurpose steam cleaner.
«The blackened mop pad is proof that the Shark steam mop really does clean floors. Our one complaint is that we wish that it took less effort to scrub; we really had to push hard to remove anything stuck to the floor.»—Joline Buscemi, Product Tester
Best Vacuum and Steam Mop: Bissell Symphony All-in-One Vacuum and Steam Mop
If your cleaning time is limited or it seems like a hassle to run the vacuum before steam cleaning your floors, then you need an all-in-one unit like the Bissell Symphony Vacuum and Steam Mop.
This multi-functional steam cleaner sanitizes with the power of steam, vacuums up light dirt and debris, or combines the two for a double-duty cleaning experience. The nice thing about this combination steam cleaner is the fact that the vacuum and steam function are independent of each other — so choose the cleaning capacity that is right for the job.
To employ the steam function, you will need to hold down a trigger – but it’s located in the handle in a spot that is natural to hold during operation. Many users don’t find it to be an inconvenience. The suction ability of this vacuum is not necessarily as strong as standalone vacuum cleaners, but most people find it to be sufficient for quick clean-up before steam cleaning floors. It’s a great choice for pet owners, since dog and cat hair seem to be always present and pose a challenge when steam cleaning. With the Bissell Symphony Vacuum and Steam Mop, you can clear debris and steam clean floors with one swipe — saving you time and energy!
Best for Hard Surface Floors: Sienna Luna Plus Steam Cleaning System
If you have hard surface flooring and are looking for a steam cleaner that will clean and revitalize your tile, marble, laminate, or wood flooring, then the Sienna Luna Plus Steam Cleaning System is our top recommendation.
This steam cleaner has a reusable microfiber pad that fits over the mop head to clean flooring. What really sets the Sienna Luna Plus apart for cleaning hard surface floors is its vibrating motion that assists in removing grime and debris. Users report that the Sonic Micro Plus Vibration technology really does assist in getting floors cleaner with less effort and elbow grease. Other steam cleaning mops lack this scrubbing assist, with many being equipped with only a manual scrubber or no scrubber at all.
Like many steam cleaners, the Sienna Luna Plus comes with multiple attachments so you can use the unit for a variety of purposes. But the unit really shines when it comes to floor cleaning and users most often were satisfied with it for this purpose. A few people noted issues with parts breaking or melting, but these were speedily remedied by the manufacturer. All in all, the Sienna Luna Plus is a great choice for steam cleaning hard surface floors in your home.
Best for Carpet: O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop
If you want to be able to zoom between hard surface floors and carpeting, then the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop is an excellent choice.
This lightweight steam mop weighs in at only 5 pounds, making it easy to maneuver. It features a triangular cleaning surface (great for corners) with replaceable microfiber pads. Its claim to fame is as a budget hard surface steam cleaner, but we love the fact that it includes a snap-on plastic glider to allow the mop to refresh carpets and rugs.
This steam mop kills up to 99.9% of bacteria, and the ability to use this on both hard and soft surface flooring means that you can banish germs wherever they may be lurking — including your carpets. While users love the quick heating element, the one drawback is that it can be tough to tell when the water reservoir is full or approaching empty. Despite that, the O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop is a versatile choice for cleaning carpets and hard surfaces without having to switch tools or appliances in the middle of your cleaning session.
Best for Spot Cleaning: BISSELL Little Green ProHeat Portable Cleaner
Though not specifically billed as a steam cleaner, the Bissell Little Green ProHeat Portable Cleaner combines the power of hot water and suction to deliver a spot cleaning performance that replaces the need for full-size steam cleaners.
The Bissell Little Green ProHeat Cleaner is a great tool to treat and remove stains on your upholstery, rugs, curtains, automotive upholstery and more. Instead of pulling out a large steam cleaner, tackle small stains and messes with the Little Green ProHeat Portable Cleaner. It has an onboard heating element that is specifically for heating the water used in cleaning. It also features two easy-to-clean tanks and a simple functional design.
A few people noted an odor coming from the machine after repeated uses, but this is easily remedied by keeping the tanks clean after each use and not allowing residue to build-up. Overall, users love this machine’s ability to make stains and messes vanish – even if after an extended period of time. If you’re looking to replace a full-size steam cleaner with a portable version for smaller tasks, the Bissell Little Green Portable Cleaner is the answer.
What to Look for in a Steam Cleaner
Surface Steam cleaners can be used on a wide range of surfaces, from upholstery and curtains to floors and grout lines. Depending on how you plan to use yours, you may want to invest in a product that’s specially designed for certain surfaces. On the other hand, there are some models that can do it all, though they may not be as effective in certain areas as specialized steamers.
Size Steam cleaners come in many different sizes, including light, handheld units and more cumbersome vacuum-style models. Consider the size of the steamer when shopping. Smaller products are more portable and easy to store, but large models can run for longer and tackle bigger jobs.
Attachments Some steam cleaners come equipped with attachments that will help you clean certain areas of your home. For instance, you may come across grout brushes, fabric steamers, detail brushes, and more. These accessories can be a helpful addition if you want to use your steamer for multiple purposes.

When it comes to grout cleaners, this one from The Floor Guys gets top marks all around. Its name says it all: Grout-Eez. This professional-strength formula is about as easy to use as it gets—just spray it on, wait 10 minutes, then wipe away whatever dirt and grime is lurking in your grout. Grout-Eez is safe for both ceramic and porcelain tile and the only change it will make to the color of your grout is to bring it back to its original color (remember that one?).
It promises to be the strongest grout cleaner you can buy online, and customers testify that it works quickly and effectively. A glance at their impressive before-and-after comparison photos makes a convincing argument to give this grout cleaner a try. Grout stains, beware.
Runner-Up Best Overall: Black Diamond Stoneworks Ultimate Grout Cleaner
From Black Diamond, this grout cleaner promises to clean even the grimiest grout, and customers say it delivers on that promise. It attacks grease, oil and soap deposits with a vengeance. The acid-free formula is safe for ceramic, marble, and porcelain tiles. To use, you spray it on, wait for one to three minutes, then use a brush to loosen and rinse it off. It can also be used with a grout steam cleaner for extra cleaning power.
While it’s not designed to remove mold or calcium deposits (you’ll need a separate cleaner for those), many customers say for basic grout stains it’s the best. While it may take a bit of elbow grease to get the product’s full benefit, most agree the results are worth it.
Best Multi-Purpose: Soft Scrub With Bleach Gel
For a cleaner that will leave your grout gleaming and tackle the rest of your house too, customers swear by Soft Scrub With Bleach Gel. The gel formula is great for getting deep into those crevices, and leaves them looking brighter and whiter (that is if they were white before). The bleach in the formula works to kill germs on everything from your kitchen countertops to your shower and toilet.
It’s non-abrasive, so it’s safe for most surfaces, but it’s tough enough to get out tough stains like coffee. To use, you apply, rub and rinse, letting it sit longer for tougher stains. Customers swear by it, saying it leaves grout and other surfaces looking like new.
Best With a Whitener: Zep Grout Cleaner and Whitener
For white grout that isn’t so white anymore, there’s this formula from Zep. A grout cleaner and whitener in one, it promises to have your grout as white as white can be in just minutes, with little to no scrubbing required.
It’s not safe for all surfaces—not recommended for marble, stone, metal or Corian—but it is bleach-free, so you don’t have to worry about it discoloring colored grout. Customers say it works better than expected, doesn’t have an overpowering scent, and that it’s a bargain for the price. One reviewer on Homedepot.com went so far as to say they think it’s underpriced, it works so well.
Best for Showers: Home Armor FG502 Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover
When it comes to shower grout, you need something tough enough to take on stubborn mold and mildew, like this spray from Home Armor. The bleach-based formula promises to kill them instantly, with no scrubbing required (seriously, no scrubbing), and keeps them from coming back for up to two months. Beyond the grout, you can use it for all your other bathroom cleaning needs, including the shower curtain, toilet and beyond.
Customers are wowed by this product, saying it melts away shower mold, and while it sounds too good to be true, you really don’t have to do any scrubbing. Reviewers call it “amazing,” “magical” and “the best product ever.” Some say the fumes are fairly strong though, so be sure to take precautions when using it.
Best for Kitchen: KRUD KUTTER KK32 Original Concentrated Cleaner/Degreaser
With its no-nonsense name, Krud Kutter is designed to cut through all the crud in your grout and beyond. While it works on almost any surface, including denim, driveways and even engines, it works especially well on the tile found in kitchens because it contains a degreaser. For tile and grout, it’s recommended you use the product at full strength, but it should be diluted for use on other surfaces. To use, you spray it on and wipe off, no rinsing required.
Customers are crazy for this product and are blown away by the results they get in various areas of their home. They also note that it doesn’t have the strong chemical odor of other tough cleaners and like that it’s made from non-toxic ingredients.
Best for Floors: TECH 128 oz. Grout Cleaner
With the pitter patter of little feet, big feet and those of pets, floor grout can be some of the grimiest in the house. That means you want something tough, but also safe, because, of course, all those feet are precious. TECH grout is 100 percent odorless and 100 percent biodegradable, yet it promises to get out your toughest grout stains. To use, you spray it on, scrub with the included brush, then rinse or mop. No residue is left behind, just grout that looks cleaner and brighter.
Customers say that while it may take a bit of elbow grease to scrub out the stains, the results are worth it.
How We Tested
We bought two of our readers’ favorite grout cleaners that our reviewer tested for four hours. We asked our tester to consider the most important features when using these grout cleaners, from strength to ease of application. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.
What to Look for in a Grout Cleaner
Strength The most important thing you want from a grout cleaner is, of course, clean grout. How strong of a cleaner you need depends on how dirty your grout is. If you’re just looking to prevent gunk from building up on grout that’s already reasonably clean, then a milder cleaner may be fine. If, however, your grout is covered in tough stains and deposits, you’ll want to choose a stronger one.
Type Just like there are different types of grout, there are different types of grout cleaner for them. There are those designed specifically for showers or kitchens, while others can be used on any grout. Consider the type of surface surrounding the grout, as well, to make sure a particular type of cleaner is safe for it, as some can damage various types of stone and marble.
Application You also want to consider how much elbow grease is involved. With some cleaners, you simply spray on then wipe off, while others will take some scrubbing. Grout cleaners also come in sprays, gels, and pens, which may influence your choice depending on your preference.
What is The Best Steamer for Cleaning Your Couch, Mattress and Your Home?
The sole purpose of steam cleaners is to allow for easier floor and surface cleaning. However, people often use them to get rid of bed bugs and dust mites as well. They operate by heating up the water that circulates within them. That way, steam cleaners produce steam at a high pressure which eliminates grease, dirt, and germs. Another benefit of using them is that you won’t have to use and deal with harsh chemicals. Depending on what you want to clean, you can either opt for a steam mop or a handheld steam cleaner. Here are five cleaners which we consider to be the best currently on the market.
Top 5 Steam Cleaner Reviews
1. LIGHT ‘N’ EASY Multifunctional Steamer
The company behind this cleaner, ‘’LIGHT ‘N’ EASY’’, wanted to make sure that their cleaner is as universal as possible. The cleaner is highly modular since it features a couple of removable parts. It can be used as a regular steam mop, carpet cleaner, handheld cleaner, and mirror & glass cleaner. It comes with a flexible hose which enables greater control during the cleaning process (you take the power of the steamer in your palm). The hose is easily detachable.
Additionally, it features three adjustable steaming programs/modes. That is an extremely useful feature to have. The reason for that is because it appropriates the cleaning to different types of surfaces (various floorings and bed surfaces). The cleaner takes up to 30 seconds in order to produce the heated steam. Once it reaches the desired heat level it can eliminate most of the germs effortlessly. What that means is that the cleaner completely excludes the use of additional sanitization chemicals.
Another interesting fact is that the cleaner does not create puddles of water after its usage. That’s always a benefit because you don’t have to deal with soggy residue on the floors or the bedding.
The whole cleaner is quite lightweight and allows for easier maneuvering and operating. Despite its lightweight property, the cleaner yet feels sturdy enough. It doesn’t leave off the impression of a low-quality product.
All in all, we think that the product is a worthy solution to all germ-related problems that you might have. However, it’s definitely not without its flaws. We’ve summarized some points in the form of a ‘’Pro and Con’’ list.
The cleaner offers a decent level of modularity (you can use it however you want) It features three modes of steaming (these are quite handy as they offer different settings for different surfaces) The cleaner is lightweight and easy to use
The cleaner feels sturdy, but the plastic itself looks a bit cheap The mop pads are a bit thin on the sides
2. McCulloch MC1275 Steam Cleaner
McCulloch’s products always offer a high level of power and versatility. That being said, the design of MC1275 uses hot pressured steam to eliminate germs, stains, grime, and grease. We think that it’s safe to say that the cleaner delivers in that regard! We’ve tested the cleaner on a germ-infested area (on dust mites, to be precise). After two uses, the dust mites were completely gone. Just like the previous cleaner, this one doesn’t rely on the use of harsh chemicals.
One feature that separates this cleaner from the rest is the fact that it has a large tank capacity. The tank can store up to 48 ounces of water and can heat up in under eight minutes. The steam that the tank provides can last up to 45 minutes.
Furthermore, the cleaner has a good reach range. That is due to the fact that it comes with a 15-foot long power cord and a 9-foot long steam hose. These assets greatly increase the aspect of accessibility. There are 18 other accessories that come with the tank. Some of these are a floor mop, mop pads, nylon brushes, scrub pad, squeegee, brass brush, etc. The accessories contribute as well when it comes to those hard-to-reach places (under the bed, etc.).
The instruction manual that it comes with is fairly easy to understand. There are simple step-by-step instructions which showcase the setup process.
The cleaner features a large tank capacity It comes with eighteen different accessories The cleaner has an extra-long reach range
The additional accessories are not very durable
3. Wagner 0282014 915 On-demand Steam Cleaner
Wagner is a 120-volt steam cleaner that can be basically used in every room in your home. Its power steamer uses a natural chemical-free formula which doesn’t leave any residue. What this means is that it’s completely safe to use around pets and children. We tried using it to clean a sofa, and the results were quite pleasing. We’ve used its deep clean feature to remove bacteria and germs from underneath the surface of the bedding. It can be used with surfaces such as barbeque grills, bathroom fixtures, beds & sofas, etc.
There are two modes when it comes to the steaming process. The green light indicates that the cleaner can begin the process of steaming. The red indicator tells you that the steam is heating up. It’s relatively easy to understand its system which greatly increases the user-friendly aspect of the product.
The cleaner does come with a set of accessories (which you can change on the go). If you want to change them without turning off the device you can hold them over a bucket and then pull the trigger of the cleaner. Once the water stops flowing and the steam starts coming out, you are ready to use the steamer along with other accessories.
In terms of its performance, we wouldn’t say that it’s on par with the previous products. However, it utilizes all the necessary functions in an optimal way. When it comes to dealing with germs and bacteria, we can confirm that it does what it was designed to do.
The cleaner comes with accessories (just like the previous one) It’s very user-friendly
It does not perform equally well on different surfaces
4. PurSteam Handheld Pressurized Steam Cleaner
The main idea behind this steam cleaner was to make it affordable and effective. Considering that it is a handheld system, we can say that it (sort-of) matches that description. The effectiveness aspect is reflected in how lightweight it is. The cleaner comes with nine accessories which can help you reach those hard to reach areas. That is especially useful when dealing with bed bugs. You can easily reach all the crevices of the bed as well. You don’t have to dismantle everything and clean each part of the bed separately. The accessories are easy to set up and remove so you won’t be having any problems there.
The drawback of the device comes in the form of warm-up time. Even though the manufacturer advertises the product as a fast-heating system, we have to disagree. It takes about six to seven minutes for the device to heat up. In comparison to what is advertised (three to four minutes) that is far more.
All in all, for a handheld cleaner it does what it was designed to do. You will have to wait for a while for it to heat up. Once it heats up, it performs on a satisfactory level.
The accessories are well designed (you can easily clean your furniture with the addition of the handheld cleaner accessories) It’s lightweight (even for a handheld cleaner)
The cleaner takes too long to warm-up The instruction manual is a bit confusing
5. Bissell PowerFresh
This steam cleaner offers an extensive list of features. It features three modes of cleaning which are low, medium, and high. The power that it operates with is around 1500 watts. It can heat up the water and produce the steam in about 30 seconds (which is about average). Its water tank is located on the top end of the mop. The tank is fairly easy to maintain and refill (even during cleaning). Keep in mind that it’s better to use demineralized and distilled water with it. Like other products from our review list, it doesn’t rely on using chemicals. In fact, using chemicals in the water tank should be avoided by all means when using this cleaner.
The cleaner comes with a set of spring breeze fragrance discs. What they do is that they add the value of freshness to each cleaning. Furthermore, the scrubber that it comes with ensures that most bacteria and germs are eliminated right from the start. It definitely works faster in that regard in comparison to the other products that we mentioned. However, note that you should read the manual and follow the instructions if you want to achieve that level of effectiveness.
Furthermore, the shape of the cleaner’s handle is ergonomic and sturdy enough. Using the cleaner doesn’t feel like a painful experience because the handle is easy on the hands.
The cleaner is very effective when dealing with germs because it operates 2x faster The handle of the cleaner is shaped well, and it doesn’t bring discomfort during the cleaning
It bunches up the cloth when you mop it (this applies to some bed surfaces as well)
Things to Consider Before Buying a Steam Cleaner
What you end up buying strongly depends on what your preferences are. If you just want to clean the bacteria from the floors, then you should opt for a steam mop. For smaller furniture, a handheld cleaner would be a better choice. However, each of these products requires certain features in order to perform well. Here’s a short list of features.
Versatility is important if you want to be able to clean lots of different areas using only one device. Some products (like some steam mops) are limited in this regard.
2. Size & Weight
Always make sure that the dimensions of the product are to your liking. The weight of the product can influence the way you are handling it. That refers to either carrying the device or pushing it around.
3. Accessories and Attachments
Most cleaners come with different accessories which increase the versatility of the device. If you want to clean smaller surfaces and other furniture (besides beds and sofas) you should consider looking into this aspect.
4. The Size of the Water Tank
Water tank determines how much steam your device can produce. Opt for a bigger tank if you don’t want to refill the tank every now and then. Smaller tanks usually imply that you have to refill them in the middle of your cleaning.
We think that it’s important to consider how easy to use each product is. Handheld devices are the best in that regard. Larger devices do provide deeper and better cleans, but at the expense of being harder to handle.
Your monetary resources will greatly influence your decision of purchasing a steam cleaner, which goes without saying. The prices usually determine what set of features, accessories, and properties each device has. However, most steam mops and handheld cleaners have reasonable prices.
The purpose of these reviews was to illustrate different products and present them in their entirety. We hope that the text was able to appropriate the issue of selecting the right steam cleaner for you. It’s understandable that some of the products have greater advantages over the other. However, that does not exclude the products without those advantages as a viable choice.
Whatever you end up deciding on basically boils down to what your preferences are. If you want a device that can easily deal with germs and bacteria anywhere like your mattress or couch, perhaps consider purchasing one of the handheld models. If you’re focused on cleaning dust mites from the floors, then a steam mop is probably the best solution for you.
In addition, you should also buy other equipment such as vacuum cleaners, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers to better prevent allergy symptoms.
Killing Bed Bugs with Steamers
You might have heard of the popular saying, “Sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite.” However, due to the popularity of that phrase, some people believe that bedbugs are a myth, just like Bigfoot. However, they exist.
They thrive in warm places, like in mattresses, and suck your blood when you are trying to enjoy a good night’s sleep. In short, they are quite a nightmare.
If you have ever woken up with an itchy feeling or have discovered swollen red skin, you might have a bed bug bite! These bites are quite different from those of fleas and mosquitos as bed bugs are known to bite in vertical rows rather than randomly.
If you are certain that the insect bites on your hand are of a bed bug, now is the time to wage war against these tiny and insufferable pests. One way to do so is by using steamers.
Can Steam Kill Bed Bugs?
Yes, it can! Steam is not just a way of killing bed bugs, but it is THE way of killing them. Among all other options available, the effectiveness of this method is unprecedented.
Why? Well, unlike other methods that deal with eliminating bed bugs of a specific stage, steam can be used to eradicate bed bugs, regardless of what stage of development they are at. However, it is important to follow the correct procedure and temperature requirement.
Also, just because steam is effective doesn’t mean you can use the steamer used for your clothes to kill bed bugs. You need to select the steamer for this purpose very carefully. The chosen product must deliver the required temperature.
Moreover, the prices of these products are quite high. Hence, it is a much better decision to buy it as a community or just rent it. After all, if you steam the room correctly, the chances of the beg bugs returning are low.
The effectiveness of the steam operation (as we like to call it) also depends on where the bed bugs are. For instance, if they are on the surface of the mattress, you can rest assured that the operation will be enough to teach those little pests a lethal lesson. It can be effective even if they are present ¾ inches below the surface of the mattress.
If the bedbugs reside in the cracks of your wall, the process will only be effective up to 2-3/8 inches into the crack.
The best temperature for killing bed bugs is at least 160-180 degrees Fahrenheit. By the end of it, you will be able to get rid of both adult bug bites and their eggs.
